Lindsey Gallacher Jewellery and Art My jewellery and art studio is open on 15 Traill street, Thurso (1st floor)

I make bespoke precious metal jewellery from customer’s own pebbles and rocks.

I also create artwork mostly inspiredby the Caithness landscape and people Lindsey is a qualified jewellery designer who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with 1st class honours in silversmithing and jewellery. She was born and raised in Caithness and has developed a range of jewellery incorporating Caithness stone with precious metals. She has just opened a new premises that sells the work of others alongside her own creations and also holds beginner jewellery making workshops

I made this oxidised ring as a possible design to make, back in May when I was asked to come up with a ring workshop for five visiting male journalists to Old Pulteney Distillery for their 200th anniversary.

The brief, to incorporate old techniques in a contemporary way to celebrate the distillery’s rich history. In the end it wasn’t possible to make this riveted design as we only had a very short time and we made hammered chunky rings to emulate the textures in the cliffs near Wick and they all seemed delighted with their creations.

I had researched the job of a cooper and figured riveting was a detail that could be interesting. I looked up images online but when I arrived at the visitor centre after having made my sample, I found a barrel outside with two rivets and this seems the standard.

The metalsmithing techniques are fascinating to me, I can honestly watch these videos for hours and I feel like my great great grandad who was a blacksmith in Thurso must have filtered down to me a little. Many are similar to the silversmithing I learned at college but the tools are very different, apart from the hammers of course.

Anyway, fun fact, if you have oxidised silver jewellery which has worn off and you want to re-oxidise it, you can pop it in a sealed bag for a few hours with a mashed boiled egg and the sulphur fumes will do the job 😄

I’m delighted to now be a Tropic Ambassador. There seemed to be a hundred people selling these products here in Caithness during lockdown and it quite frankly made me switch off at the time from what is an exceptional product. But having just been reintroduced to them again recently and getting to the stage in my life where what I put on my skin is very important, but also having North Shore cosmetics already in stock at the studio, I think it’s be a great addition to my business.

If you are someone who is here only for the stones and art, I promise I won’t be spamming this page with facial cleansing routines 😅

I have a number of testers available at the studio, so if you don’t already have an ambassador to buy from, please pop in to try some products and I can give you a link to my shop, or you can order and pick up. A lovely couple of rings for a lovely couple celebrating their 25th anniversary. The 6 gold lines to represent everyone in their family 🫶

I don’t advertise often that I make wedding bands but I do, and I love working in gold and also enjoy something that requires a bit of thought in the making process.

These are made from sterling silver and 9ct gold. The assay office has stamped both 925 and 375 on the inside😊
