If you would like to perform tonight it would be worth changing your Zoom audio settings to get better sound quality.
Here's a link to tell you how.

During the coronavirus self-quarantine, my kids have been taking advantage of video conferencing for many of their classes. In the very brief video below, I go through a few of the settings I sele…

Music in the Virtual House again tonight, 7th May at 8.10pm. We'll have another go with Zoom. Although we had audio quality issues last time there doesn't seem to be a better alternative at the moment.
And you don't even have to get out of the armchair to visit .

Thanks so much to everyone who joined us in our first Music in the Virtual House session last night.

All in all I think it was a success socially, not so much musically. The sound quality was a real problem. I've been checking it out and I'm thinking that Zoom is not going to cut it as the platform that we use. Its sound algorithms are geared towards conferencing, heavily compressing the data that's transmitted and favouring the human voice over other sounds. That's why guitars were being suppressed and the sound was intermittent.

I'm looking into other systems, particularly the one that Pete and Hilly mentioned, Jamkazam. It's designed for real-time musical collaboration. I'll do some experiments and when I've done some more testing we'll have another go.

Do we let a little thing like a worldwide pandemic stop us? No, we're made of sterner stuff than that.

So, the very first Music in the Virtual House will be held tonight, Thursday 2nd April.

You can join in from the comfort of your own home without breaking any laws or government guidelines.

You'll need a phone, or a computer, or a tablet, or something like that, and you'll need to download and install Zoom by clicking on the link below. You can set it up in advance. At the scheduled time you can click the link again to join the meeting, which will start at 8pm tomorrow.

Be prepared for teething troubles, it's new and therefore things won't go according to plan. We'll probably spend some of the time working it all out and helping those who are having trouble. But once we've got this first one sorted we can hold others, and not necessarily just once a month.

If you want to perform, that's fine. Just join the meeting and when there's a break in the music we'll all have a chat and figure that out. But you won't be able to collaborate with anyone who's not in the same room as you, there's too much delay in the signal for that to be possible.

So, see you in the virtual world.

Noel

Well, it looks like we're all grounded for a while.

There'll be no more Music in the House until Boris tells us that it's OK to come out and play again.

We'll let you know...

And big thanks to Nigel Newman who took some great atmospheric photos on the night. Here are some of them.
