Teign Choral Society Christmas Concert

Friday 8 th December at St James’ Teignmouth saw the society once again, following their Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat concert in May, illicit a wonderful audience reaction to their spirited and uplifting performance of a varied programme of both traditional and more unusual Christmas pieces. The audience themselves contributed immensely to the evening’s atmosphere by their enthusiastic singing of well loved carols, culminating in an inspiring performance of Oh Come All ye Faithful.

The researches of Music Director David Bowles had led him to a work by Ariel Ramirez that uses rhythms and melodies of rural Latin America in telling the Christmas Story Navidad Nuestra (Our Nativity). The story is told in 6 movements, some joyous, some wondrous but eventually leading to a vivid evocation of the steadfast flight from the butchering Herod.

The Society’s next concert in May will, in part, be a tribute to the really significant composer Karl Jenkins in his 80 th year. We will be singing his Motets “a set of intimate and spiritually uplifting choral works that feature new works but also movements from his most popular works, including The Armed Man, his Requiem, Adiemus and the Peacemakers.”

Following the success of May 2023 we will be returning to the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber together with the pithy lyrics of Tim Rice in a suite of songs from Phantom of the Opera.

Pianist Carol Massey is an inspiring accompanist who also brings a great sense of humour to our rehearsals.

Anyone thinking of joining the Society would be warmly welcomed. You could come along and see if it is what you’re looking for. There are no auditions. Rehearsals are at 7.15 on Wednesdays at St James’ Teignmouth, starting on 10 th January. More details from Nigel

Teign Choral Society starts preparations following the Joseph boost

In May this year Teign Choral Society got the Teignmouth promenade rocking with their stunning performance of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat. A performance much enhanced by the enthusiastic participation of the audience in such numbers as the concluding Any Dream Will Do.
In December the Society will be once again be performing their Christmas concert at St James’ Church Teignmouth, a regular event that over the years has become a central part of the town’s Festive season.
There will be plenty of opportunity for the audience to sing popular carols such as Once in Royal David’s City and O Little Town of Bethlehem and the Society will perform several items, notably Little Drummer Boy and Navidad Nuestra (interestingly Our Christmas) of Ariel Ramirez, which tells the story of Christ’s birth and early life through atmospheric South American melodies.
If you are interested in joining the society, please feel free to come along and see if we are your cup of tea. First rehearsal is at St James’ on Wednesday 13th September, at 7.15.

Teign Choral Society – A wonderful asset for the town

2022 saw the society celebrating its 70th Anniversary, also making a much appreciated contribution to Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee.

We first emerged from lockdown in September 2021, preparing for our Christmas concert. Anticipation, excitement and not a little apprehension were in the air as David Bowles rehearsed us towards our first public performance since 2019.
Would we be able to sing to the same standard that we had come expect since 1952? Would there still be an appetite for our blend of spiritual and secular music among the local population? Would they prefer other means of festivity?

Our perfectly normal concerns proved unfounded. There was a longing for live performance of great Christmas music and the concert brought great pleasure to many people and many complements as to the music, which featured, along with traditional carols, the choir singing The Twelve Days of Christmas by Craig Courtney, where each days verse featured a different musical style, from 6th century Gregorian chant to John Philip Souza, via such as Beethoven and Wagner. Very challenging for the choir but went down very well with the audience.

Then came June 2022 and John Rutter’s powerful evocation of American spirituals, Feel the Spirit, plus pieces by Cesar Franck and Edward Elgar and then popular music from the time of Her Majesty’s accession. We seemed to strike the correct balance between deep emotion and pure enjoyment and the concert was not only a wonderful event in its own right but played a part in the town’s feeling of festivity.

Members of the choir felt great confidence as we approached our traditional Christmas concert because of the enjoyment and appreciation expressed by members of the audience. This time David had chosen On Christmas Night by Bob Chilcott, which narrates each stage of the Nativity story through well loved tunes arranged in novel ways and alignments so as to bring the whole alive. Carol singing and a very sociable after performance get together gave the evening just the right Seasonal feel.

Since resuming activities Teign Choral Society has shown itself to be an integral and much appreciated element within the life of Teignmouth.
Our May 2023 concert will have contrasting pieces. The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice will follow Dvorak’s Mass.
If you would like to think about joining us we are a very friendly group and you could come along to see if it is for you. First meeting is at the Alice Cross Centre Teignmouth at 7.15 on Wednesday on 11th January. There are no auditions.
