🎶 Song Of The Month - DJ Lubi’s Choice 🎶

This week, we’re handing the reins over to resident DJ Lubi Jovanovic to share one of his favourite songs! Check it out below, and read a little more about why he loves it so much 👇

“One salsa song that I've liked since it came out in 1993 is "No Vale La Pena" by La Combinación Perfecta. A live recording featuring musicians and singers of the RMM label, it's a duet for two vocalists, Ray Sepulveda and Johnny Rivera.

They sing about falling in love, how it can be painful, and in the end, it's not worth it - "No vale la pena enamorarse" ("It's not worth falling in love"). Something everyone can relate to at some point in their life 🙂

As a salsa dance number, it's got nice horns and percussion, great vocals and melodies/hooks everyone sings along to.

For salsa dancers, it's a medium tempo so that they don't even notice it's almost six minutes long. I've been playing it for over three decades and still do today.”

There’s less than two weeks to go until we welcome the one and only Nicolai back to Riley Smith Hall! Nicolai was a big hit with our dancers last year, but in case you don’t know him, let us introduce you…

Nicolai has been on the scene for over 30 years. Originally based in Leeds, he was instrumental in developing the salsa community all over the North: from Newcastle to Derby, Liverpool and Hull. His technical expertise, smooth lead and approachable teaching-style has made him a popular, much loved and respected teacher.

We can’t wait to have Nicolai back teaching with us on 12th September. His bootcamp will focus on footwork and partnerwork, to bring smooth moves and connection, flow and feel to your dancing.

We’ve been digging through the archives and come across some video footage of the good old days of Calle Ocho in Leeds, and we absolutely can’t wait for our DJ reunion next month!

On the decks, we’ll have:

🎶 DJ Dr Salsa, DJ Lubi and DJ Fabio in the salsa room playing Salsa, Cha Cha Cha and Son

🎶 DJ Jane Salsaldi playing bachata in our all new dance space

🎶 DJ Sean Wilson - playing for all our Kizomba lovers in the upstairs room

For those that remember it, this DJ line-up (along with Ben Farman, our Sabor y Salsa sound engineer, photographer and graphic designer) is a throwback to one of the best loved dance nights in Leeds latin dance history, and we hope to recreate some of that magic on 12th September in Riley Smith Hall!

Summer may be coming to an end, but there’s still plenty to look forward to at Sabor Y Salsa before 2026 is out!
