'Sweeping up the leaves in Swindon Town Gardens', Harold Dearden. Circa 1954, Oil on Canvas, 60x54cm.
"When I first started the research project on my grandfather Harold Dearden, about two years ago, the Town Gardens and Westlecot Road were the first places I visited in Swindon.
I have many fond childhood memories of walking down Westlecot Road with Harold and Ruth Dearden and spending time in the gardens. For an impressionable five or six year old the goldfish in the pond always seemed huge and the aviary was just full of inspiring colourful tropical birds!
I'm very fortunate to have one of my grandfather's pictures of the Swindon Town Gardens on the wall in my office. It's called "Sweeping up the leaves in Swindon Town Gardens".
From my research I have found that it first appeared in the Swindon Artists Society Annual Exhibition in 1954. (As Head of the Swindon Art School between 1920 -1950 and Chairman of the Swindon Artist Society for many years he helped organise this annual exhibition for many years). It's an oil painting, 60 x 54cms.
This picture did appear in my lecture to the Friends of Museum and Art Swindon last year - "The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) viewed through Harold Dearden’s artwork". See https://youtu.be/bpsFKxLPW6w
It will, I hope, also appear in my forthcoming book on Harold Dearden.
Your collection of pictures [on Town Gardens Art Swindon] are truly magical and beautifully capture so many aspects of the gardens and their seasonality, thank you so much for sharing them with me. I'm sure my grandfather would be extremely pleased to see so many varied vivid pictures of the Town Gardens - It was a very special place that both he, and his amazing wife, Ruth really loved."
