Watercolour and sunshine, not a bad combo 🍹

We were in Corfu on our honeymoon and while most people were sunbathing I found myself painting by the pool. After months of wedding planning and crafting, this was the first time I had made something just for the fun of it in what felt like forever ☀️

Obviously I had to order a few cocktails for research purposes 🍹😄

Sometimes you finish a painting convinced it’s a total mess 😂

I walked away from this one thinking I couldn’t make out what it was supposed to be… and then came back later and suddenly the waterfall and forest just clicked into place ✨

Funny how a bit of distance can completely change how you see something 🎨

She might look calm and cool but this one nearly broke me 😅

The challenge for this class was to sketch the whole figure using no more than 12 lines. The second picture was all I managed to do after 2.5 hours… yes, really 😂

Turns out the reason for my meltdown was not that I was going crazy! the paper wasn’t a true rectangle so all my measurements were being distorted. I redid the whole sketch at home ready for week 2 when we painted her in ✨

HELLO! My name is Inigo Montoya!🤺

During the spring course we were asked to pick a sports reference to work on for 3 weeks. I’m not really into sport… so naturally I picked a scene from The Princess Bride 😄

This was my first time painting on Bristol plate and I loved it. Unlike watercolour paper you can lift most of the watercolour paint back off even after it dries, which means you can add highlights and lights back into dark areas. It completely changes how you approach the painting!

This was clearly just an excuse to watch an iconic film 🤣 but do you think this counts as a sports painting?

I love a sunny day when I can paint in the garden, though not sure what the neighbours would have thought if they had looked out the window and saw me painting giant canvas 😄

Sometimes the best paintings come from just grabbing a few colours and seeing where it takes you ✨

Do you prefer abstract art or do you need to know what you’re looking at?

Apparently all it takes is a dramatic sky to get me painting boats 😄
This is from most recent term at and honestly the combination of watercolour and pastels completely surprised me! I chose this reference photo purely for that sky but it was the pastels on the sandbank that really stole the show for me ✨

I don’t think I’m about to become a boat painter anytime soon … but never say never!

Some people frame their wedding photos. I picked up a paintbrush 😄🎨

In the autumn course our main study was portraits… and because I clearly don’t do things the easy way, I decided to paint someone I actually know… my new husband 🙈

Unlike my usual approach I skipped the detailed pencil drawing and just did a loose painted sketch over the base layer… so considering that, I’m pretty pleased the proportions turned out alright!

Portraits are always a challenge and it’s not perfect or a mirror image of him, I can see a few things I’d do differently next time (if there is a next time 🤣), but there is something there, and that feels like enough 🥂
And honestly? I am unreasonably proud of the Aperol Spritz in his hand 😄

I couldn’t be more excited to share this one as it’s one of my favourites 🐘

This was from my first term at 10 week art course, and it was a totally new painting technique to what I have done before but I love its effect, even though adding those final layers of colour were very scary as I didn’t want to ruin it!

What do you think, did the final layers of warm colour make it pop, or did you prefer the earlier stage?🐘

Oopsies that was a longer break than planned 🙈

Life has been a bit busy since 2021! We have moved twice, bought our first home, got engaged and did lots of wedding planning and DIYs, we also had a year packed with celebrating so many of our loved ones who were also getting married, and then had our own perfect wedding day. It’s been a lot of the best kind of busy.

I may have stopped posting but I never stopped making things. I have attended some fantastic art courses, workshops, and have some pieces I can’t wait to share.
I’m not sure how to just pick up where I left off, so I’m starting here with a cheeky sneak peek and a life update!

New work coming soon. It feels good to be back. 🎨✨
