Welcome to my world of art!

I'm Zoe James-Williams, a Welsh figurative artist based along the picturesque Gower coast. With a heart deeply rooted in creativity, I find profound joy in translating life's moments onto paper. A Passion for the Performing Arts:
My artistic journey is entwined with a deep passion for the Performing Arts, particularly ballet. The graceful movements and captivating stories of dancers have been a we

llspring of inspiration. From The Welsh National Opera to The National Theatre, and renowned companies like The Royal Ballet, Bolshoi, and ENB, I've had the privilege to capture the essence of these performances on paper and canvas. A Trailblazing Artist:
As the first Artist in Residence at Swansea Grand Theatre, I've had the honour of not only depicting the vibrant theatre life but also sharing my knowledge through drawing and watercolour art classes. These classes, held in Mumbles and online, foster creativity and artistic growth. A Symphony of Portraiture:
My reputation for figurative paintings and portraiture shines through a series that captures ballet dancers both on stage and in rehearsal. The ballet world has granted me the opportunity to work with luminaries from The Royal Ballet, Mariinsky, Bolshoi, and more. A Landscape of Inspiration:
The Gower coastline near Swansea, Wales, serves as my muse for landscape paintings that echo the stunning beauty of my surroundings. These creations have found homes in art collections across the country, including prestigious names like The Welsh National Opera, Swansea Grand Theatre, and even Bill Wyman of Rolling Stones fame. A Gallery of Exhibitions:
My art has found its place in renowned galleries such as The Albany Gallery in Cardiff and the Ceri Richards Gallery in Swansea. Notable exhibitions include a joint showcase at The Pure Art Gallery and a year-long solo exhibition at Swansea Grand Theatre, providing an intimate glimpse into theatre life. Nurturing Creativity:
Beyond my own creations, I'm dedicated to nurturing creativity in others. Teaching drawing and watercolor classes in Mumbles and Online I invite students to explore their artistic potential and discover the joy of self-expression. A Brush with Recognition:
My art has graced the pages of publications like Welsh Country Magazine, Aesthetica, OneWales, and Picture Business, reflecting the impact of my creative journey. Thank you for joining me on this artistic adventure. Feel free to explore my work, inquire about classes, or simply connect. Let's keep the colors of creativity alive! 🎨🌟

International Women’s Day feels very personal this year.

When I look back, so many of the things that shaped my life were inspired by women — my mum, the dancers I’ve watched and photographed, my students in the studio, and the women who inspired my paintings and creative work.

Inside this image are just a few of those moments: ballet, art, teaching, creativity, and the women who quietly shape the paths we take.

Today feels like a good moment to celebrate them, and to say thank you for the inspiration they continue to give. 🩰🎨

Valentine’s Day through ballet.

Romantic clinches. Tragic goodbyes. Hands reaching. Hearts breaking.

I’ve painted some of the most beautifully intense moments from the world’s greatest love stories told in dance. Because no one does passion like ballet. Stories of love and passion inspire everything I create.

Which couple steals your heart every time?

Keep dancing with love,
Zoe JW

So lovely to see the completed piece framed.

A ballerina in Swan Lake, drawn using the Derwent Drawing pencils. The beautiful, natural colours suit this twilight world of theatre perfectly, allowing soft layers, subtle transitions, and deeper tones to build gradually without losing delicacy.

These pencils are wonderful for mixing and layering, especially for costume, atmosphere, and low-light scenes — capturing that quiet, behind-the-scenes magic of the stage.

Market day in Uplands and everything feels festive. The bustle below, the warmth of the café, and that lovely pre-Christmas energy. I sat sketching with a cappuccino while watching the movement of people and stalls drift past.

Water-soluble pens, diluted bluey washes, and even the last drops of my coffee for shadows and atmosphere. Rebecca had my cappuccino ready before I asked… clearly I’m predictable 😂

Quiet drawing moments in the middle of all the Christmas hustle. I love this.

This series of five finished works captures my response to The Marriage of Figaro and to the return of Welsh National Opera to Swansea. Some of my most memorable moments as an artist were spent at Swansea Grand Theatre, quietly observing, sketching, and absorbing the atmosphere behind the scenes.

To be invited backstage again, after so many years, and trusted to capture this production in pen and watercolour felt incredibly special. From the cast and orchestra to the costume department and the tireless teams working out of sight, these pieces are a thank you to everyone who keeps this world-class company alive for our enjoyment.

Welsh National Opera’s return to Swansea has been a real privilege to witness and to paint.
