WHY ILLUMINATED
Illuminated manuscripts have been used for centuries. Before the invention of the printing press around 1455, all books were handwritten and decorated. Illuminated, from the Latin illuminare (to light up), denotes the glow created by the radiant colours of the illustration, as well as by real gold and silver. Illuminations took the form of decorated letters, borders and independent figurative scenes. The combination of the calligraphy and the decorations became a powerful tool to bring texts come to life
The word Illuminate has the following three definitions:
to LIGHT UP.
To decorate (a page, manuscript) with gold, silver or coloured designs
To help clarify or explain.
I want to use ILLUMINATED to bring encouragement and positivity into someone’s live (LIGHT UP) by using arts and calligraphy (DECORATE) for their special events/celebrations, and show the love and character of God through my actions and my products (CLARIFY, EXPLAIN)
ABOUT ME
I bought my first calligraphy set four years ago at a gift shop at an airport. I did not know anything about calligraphy, had never tried any sort of lettering in my life and definitely did not have the patience nor the time to pick up such a skill. As a result, this starter kit remained relatively untouched in my art box only to be picked up for the occasional Christmas gift-tag.
Fast forward a few years and I find myself following an increasing number of calligraphy-, lettering- and typography artists on social media. At this point I have been drawing in pencil and charcoal for years, so I am ready for a new challenge. I pick up my pen and dip my half-rusted nib in the pot of ink and start to teach myself this new art form. After countless failed attempts and many ink-stained practice sheets, I find myself getting the hang of it. I start combining my calligraphy with small drawings and paintings and before I know it I have actually created a product that I am really proud of!
Since then I have created different pieces for a range of occasions: baby showers, weddings, anniversaries and “just because”. I am excited to see where this journey will be taking me!
