Traditional Japanese tiger and dragon. These were super fun to do, I love learning about different tattoo styles and the history behind them so I thought I’d share my facts with you. ~ Ames ☺️
In Japanese mythology the tiger and the dragon are eternal rivals that represent opposing forces. The rivalry reflects the balance between strength and strategy, control and chaos. They are seen as natural counterparts representing the ultimate balance between opposing yet complimentary forces of nature. Together they act as a yin (tiger) and yang (dragon) representing a person mastering discipline and instinct.
The Tiger
The Japanese tiger (tora) symbolises strength, power and grounded energy.
In traditional irezumi (Japanese tattooing) tiger tattoos are believed to guard against misfortune, illness and spiritual threats and are believed to ward off demons. Tigers are often depicted alone, symbolising independence and self resilience. And despite a tigers ferocity, the Japanese tiger also symbolises mastery over emotions like anger or fear.
The Dragon
The Japanese dragon (Ryu) embodies inner strength and power channeled through control and wisdom as opposed to raw aggression. They are seen as benefactors and protectors of mankind. The colour of a dragon plays a part in meaning; black and grey meaning wisdom gained through age. Red represents strength, passion and courage. A blue dragon embraces compassion, forgiveness and gentleness. Green dragons represent a connection to nature, life and growth. A gold dragon depicts wealth, prosperity and the willingness to help others.
