Struggling with sewing jersey? Wavy necklines, stretched-out shoulders or popped stitches are really common problems, but these simple tips can help you to achieve a neater, more professional finish.

✂️ Stabilise your neckline and stretch your neckband slightly to fit the neckline as you sew it on. This helps the neckline keep its shape and encourages the neckband to sit nice and flat. I actually like to use my coverstitch binding attachment for my neckbands, which is even easier and does all of the work for you, but if you’re using a sewing machine or overlocker this is the best way to tackle it.

✂️ Use the right set-up for stretch fabrics. An overlocker is ideal, but if you’re using a sewing machine, try a ballpoint or stretch needle with Maraflex thread. It behaves much like a normal sewing thread but has stretch built in, helping prevent stitches from snapping when the fabric stretches.

✂️ Stabilise your shoulder seams to stop them stretching out of shape. I love using a narrow ribbon for a practical and pretty solution!

New dressmaking fabrics have landed and I already know what I want to sew with them 👀

First up, a silky-soft cotton sateen in the most gorgeous abstract floral print I’ve realised I stopped sewing dresses and now I’m in dire need and think the Sew Over It Florence Dress with boots would be perfect for autumn.

Then there’s this quilted woven fabric, which is making me want another Megan Nielsen Hovea Jacket immediately. I’ve worn the one I made earlier this year so much it’s just so easy to chuck on over jeans and a T-shirt.

And finally, this embroidered sherpa fleece 😍 I think it would make the cosiest Atelier Jupe Julia Sweater, I love the pretty floral embroidery for that little bit of extra detail.

We’ve added so many more new dressmaking fabrics too, including yarn-dyed cottons, weighty viscose fabrics, knitted and jersey fabrics, soft sweatshirt fabrics and matching tubular ribbing.

These 3 clever tricks can help you get a neater finish and save you a lot of faff:

🧵 Create a smooth, non-bulky neckline by avoiding the awkward overlap at the end giving you a beautifully neat finish
🧵 Stabilise shoulder seams in the prettiest way
🧵 Sew spaghetti straps and turn them through in seconds no more struggling for 20 mins plus!

Small tricks, but they can make such a difference to your sewing and help you to get so much more out of your overlocker.

We all have them… 👀🧵

Those little sewing “rules” we know we’re probably supposed to follow, but occasionally decide to ignore anyway.

Mine? I don’t always secure my facings, I sew over pins more often than I should, and sometimes I skip pattern markings in my eagerness to get started 😬

I think the more confident you become at sewing, the more you realise there isn’t one perfect way to do everything. You work out what matters to you, what you can get away with… and which shortcuts usually come back to haunt you 😂

So, confession time…

If you’re new to sewing, these 5 simple sewing machine habits are well worth learning early 👇

From threading with the presser foot up to using the right needle, bobbins and good-quality thread, these little things can make a big difference to how smoothly your machine sews and help prevent a lot of unnecessary frustration.

And don’t forget a regular clean! A little lint and fluff around the bobbin area can build up surprisingly quickly.
