Hi Jazzers

On a Stormy night we were thoroughly entertained by the laid-back Rich Bennett, the band leader of Rich Bennett New Orleans All Stars. Played with a great rhythm and tempo the songs and tunes were appreciated and great for both the dancers and listeners. The band line-up was Rich Bennett (band leader, trumpet, vocals), Zoltan Sagi (alto saxophone), Graham Woodhouse (trombone), Simon Smith (double bass), Warren James (guitar, banjo, vocals), and a welcome return after his recent operation Nick Ward (drums).

The band blew up a storm on several numbers including a hot version of ‘Rosetta’ vocalised by Rich and later ‘Hot Tamales’ with vocals by Warren. The band switched effortlessly between hot jazz numbers and romantic ballads such as ‘My silent Love’ sung by Rich and also ‘On a Dreamers Holiday’ sung by Warren. The band played a lovely jazzy version of Nat King Cole’s ‘Rambling Rose’ featuring Zoltan on alto saxophone. A Great jazz evening ended with Fats Waller’s ‘Fair and Square in Love’. Perfect.

Next Wednesday, 3rd September 2026, we shall be listening to the dulcet jazz tunes from the ever-ready Tad Newton Jazz Friends, so we hope to see you there. Take care good jazzers.

Best regards

Hi Jazzers

We were entertained last night by Washington Whirligigg at our Sutton Coldfield Trad Jazz Club. The band line-up was David Hepworth (band leader, clarinet, tenor saxophone), Liz Hepworth (double bass, vocals), Andy Bramall (banjo, guitar, vocals), Simon James (trumpet,) and Rob Cotterell (drums).

We had a jazz mixture of some trad, New Orleans, big band and blues tunes to entertain us, with good guitar riff from Andy and his vocals on the song, ‘Girl of my Dreams’. There was another guitar riff on the nicely timed tempo song, ‘Pennies from Heaven’ sung for us by Liz and she also sang the vocals on ‘Summertime’ where Andy on guitar brought in a riff from Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ which was an interesting inclusion with good effect. We enjoyed some up - tempo songs including ‘Down in H***y Tonk Town’, ‘Dark Town Strutters Ball’ and ‘Bei Mir Bista Du Shein’ which the band concluded the evening with, featuring an excellent drum solo from Andy.

Next Wednesday 26th August 2026, we shall be entertained by Rich Bennett’s New Orleans All Stars, so we hope to see you then. Stay safe and keep jazzing.

Hi Jazz Cats

A great sparkling jazz performance last night from Dave Browning's Jazz Cats at Sutton Coldfield Jazz Club which eclipsed the evening solar partial eclipse event. The line-up was Dave Browning (band leader, piano), Allen Beechey (trumpet, vocals), Zoltan Sagi (clarinet, alto saxophone), Brian Butler (trombone), Keith Donald (double bass) and Graham Smith (drums).

Plenty of great arrangements and individual solos, some examples of which included Allen on trumpet and vocals with the Jelly Roll Morton song ‘Winin’ Boy Blues’ followed by a beautiful version of ‘Old Rocking Chair’ as a quartet with Dave on piano and Allen again on trumpet. Zoltan gave us a nice feature, something we all need at present, with ‘September in the Rain’, and Dave on piano performed two solos with ‘Wild Man Blues’, followed by ‘Wolverine Blues’ which produced a blur of fingers on the keyboard from Dave.

Next Wednesday, 19th August 2026, we shall be entertained by Washington Whirligiggs, so hope to see you all then. Take care in this continuing heat.

Dear Jazzers,

What a great jazz evening at Sutton Coldfield Jazz Club last night. I have run out of superlatives to describe these talented musicians, but suffice to say excellent, wonderful, and breath-taking could fit the bill. The line-up of Spats Langham’s Hot Fingers was as follows. Spats Langham (band leader, guitar, banjo, vocals), Danny Blythe (clarinet, bass clarinet, guitar, harmonica), Malcom Sked (double bass, tuba), and Emily Campbell (vocals). There was a great blues number with Danny on harmonica with a Robert Johnson tune, ‘Me and the Devil Blues’, and you could have been in Paris with superb guitar playing by Spats on the tune ‘La Gitane’. We also had Spats playing a virtuoso banjo piece with a Django Reinhardt number, ‘Norwegian dance’ and making the banjo sing to us again with a vaudeville type jazz tune with ‘Snake Charmer of Baghdad’. Spats informed us they last played that together 22 years ago.

Next Wednesday, 12th August, we have another jazz treat with Dave Browning’s Jazz Cats who were thoroughly entertaining on their first visit to our long serving Jazz Club. We look forward to seeing you then. Take care, and be good to yourself and to others.
Best regards

Hi Jazzers,

Last night we had an eclectic mix of jazz, gospel, blues from the talented Jake Leg Jug Band at our Sutton Coldfield Trad Jazz Club. The line-up being Duncan Wilcox (band leader, double bass, vocals), Neil Hulse (guitar, vocals), Phil Shotton (clarinet, soprano & bass saxophone), Andy Henderson (cornet, flugel horn, kazoo), and Cohen Wilcox (washboard). The music was good for listening and we enjoyed a lively entertaining mix of vocal tunes with some good harmonies as evidenced in the songs, ‘Mouthful of Jam’, ‘In the Jailhouse now’, and ‘Over in the Glory Land’.

On to next Wednesday, the 5th August, when we shall be entertained by the incomparable Spats Langham’s Hot Fingers, so we hope to see you all then. Take care of yourselves.

Hi Jazzers

An excellent and lively evening of jazz at Sutton Coldfield Jazz Club with Matt Palmer’s Gatsby Go Getters evoking music from the golden age of jazz from the 1920’s and 1930’s. The line-up was Matt Palmer, band leader (clarinet, tenor saxophone, vocals), Dave Leithead (trumpet, vocals), Al Harris (bass, vocals), Jo Nutman (piano), and Tim Jones (drums).

Splendid harmonies included the Louis Armstrong composition ‘New Orleans Stomp’ featuring Matt on clarinet who deftly changed to tenor saxophone mid-tune, and later a great piano solo by Jo with ‘Maple Leaf Rag’. Also, a lovely version of the Nina Simone hit, ‘My baby just cares for me’ and not forgetting a fantastic drum solo by Tim within the song, ‘Everybody loves my baby’, with then Dave on trumpet and vocals with a fine version of ‘When you wish upon a star’.

Next Wednesday the 29th July, we welcome The Jake Leg Jazz Band, so we hope to see you then.

Hi Jazzers,

Another good jazz evening courtesy of husband-and-wife duo, Paul and Liz Bacon with their revivalist jazz band, Mississippi Dreamboats. The line-up was Paul Bacon
(drums), Liz Bacon (clarinet), Jim Blenkin (trombone), Spike Kennedy (double bass), Sarah Thatcher (banjo, tenor guitar), and special guest Emile-Van-Pelt (piano, vocals).
There were some great jazz melodies played with tempo including two Fats Waller numbers, ‘Fair and Square in Love’, and ‘Louisiana Fairytale’, and a superb piano solo from Emile with the ‘Three-Woman Blues’.

Next Wednesday 22.7.26 we look forward to the return of the ever-dependable Matt Palmer’s Gatsby Go-Getters.. Until then take care and keep jazzing.

Hi Jazzers

I am providing a jazz update concerning our Jazz Club session this Wednesday 15th July. The Boldmere Club has regrettably advised they need both rooms for this Wednesday due to England’s semi-final football match.

A decision has now been made to hold the Mississippi Dreamboats band at an earlier time of 5pm on this Wednesday 15th July. We extend our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused by this matter and hope you can attend and support us.

Best regards

Hi Jazzers
What a wonderful return to our jazz Club by band leader Paula Jackman, and her Jazz Masters. Great clarinet playing and great leadership, and of course, it assists when you are ably supported by the Jazz Masters. The full line-up was as follows, Paula Jackman (Band Leader, clarinet, tenor Saxophone, vocals), ‘Magic’ Mike Henry (cornet), Paul Taylor (trombone), Hugh Crozier (piano, vocals), ‘Lord’ Marc Easener (sousaphone), and John Watson (drums).
There were many fine jazz tunes as evidenced in the solo features including Paula on clarinet with a lovely interpretation of ‘Summertime’, a lively duet on ‘King Porter Stomp’ with Mike on cornet and Hugh on piano, a fabulous trio on ‘Bad Penny Blues’ with Hugh’s piano riff, Mike on superb cornet and John on brush sticks, and let’s not forget Hugh on vocals singing in both English and German with ‘Just a Gigolo’.

Next Wednesday 15th July, we welcome the Mississippi Dreamboats, another jazz treat to look forward to. Until then take care and keep jazzing.
