Hi Jazzers

We were thoroughly entertained last night by a new Jazz Band to our Sutton Coldfield Jazz Club, San Jacinto Stompers, and I have a feeling it will not be the last time. The line-up was Kevin Scott (band leader, banjo, vocals), Richard Church (trumpet, vocals), Brian Butler (trombone), Stephen Skidmore (clarinet, alto and soprano saxophone), John Siritt (double bass), and Ray Bowden (drums).

Playing in the old style of New Orleans jazz there was plenty of jazz stomping as evidenced in’ Panama’, ‘Them there eyes’, and a great version of ‘Ice Cream’, where we were led into the song by a few trombone choruses by Brian. There was also plenty for the dancers with tunes such as ‘Rambling Rose’, ‘Wooden Heart’, ‘Mama’s Gone, Goodbye’ (sung by Richard). Also, with a very enjoyable melody, and vocals by Kevin was the song, ‘When the swallows come back to Capistrano’, a 1958 hit for Pat Boone, and to end a great evening, Kevin on vocals performed ‘A Thousand Good Nights’. Great.

Next Wednesday. The 21st October we welcome Mark Challinor’s Wabash Jazzmen so we hope to see you then.

Hi Jazzers,

Another great jazz performance by Geoff Sansome’s Sauce City Jazz Band at our Sutton Coldfield Trad Jazz Club, keeping us royally entertained. The band line-up was Geoff Sansome (band leader, trumpet), Dave Wood (clarinet, alto and soprano saxophone, vocals), Vic Partridge (banjo, guitar,), Mark Johnson (double bass), and Dave Andrew’s (drums).

We had many contrasts during the evening from up-tempo ‘Dark Town Strutters Ball’ to a lovely arrangement of ‘Autumn Leaves’, and ‘That’s a Plenty’ to ‘I’m confessing that I love you’. We enjoyed a few Fats Waller numbers including a lively version of ‘Fair and Square in Love’, followed by a Louis Armstrong song, ‘A Kiss to Build a Dream on’ with Geoff providing the vocals. ‘There was a super version of a 19th Century hymn, ‘Walk the Streets of the City’, and to close the evenings jazz, a stomping version of ‘Bourbon Street Parade’.

Next Wednesday 14th October, we have, for the first time San Jacinto Stompers which is headed by band leader Kevin Scott, so a good jazz evening awaits. We hope to see you.

Hi Jazzers,

For a band formed in Holland in 1959 and therefore playing their brand of versatile jazz for 69 years, they kept our feet tapping and fully entertained throughout the entire evening. The Storyville Jass Band had a great line-up including Michael Muller (band leader, trumpet, vocals), Eugene de Bruijn (clarinet, saxophone, vocals), Dan Simon (double bass), Tom Stuip(banjo), and Stef Geurts (drums). We also send our best wishes from Sutton Coldfield Jazz Club to Vincent Roerdink, the trombone player, and hope he recovers soon from his accident.

We were treated to many fine jazz interpretations of the great tunes played from up- tempo numbers such as ‘African Queen’ to slower dance numbers such as ‘Stranger on the Shore’. We had a fine banjo solo from Tom with ‘Tiger Rag’ who also later sang a song in French, to a fantastic drum solo by Stef during the tune ‘Hindustan’. We all enjoyed a good vocal and clarinet feature by Eugene with the song ‘The Blues my Naughty Sweetie gives to me’. The band rounded off a fine versatile jazz evening with ‘When the Saints’ and ‘it’s a Wonderful World’. An excellent jazz evening.

Next Wednesday 7th October 2026 we welcome a local jazz band, Sauce City, headed by Geoff Sansome. We look forward to seeing you then.

Hi Jazzers,

A welcome return of Kevin Grenfell last night performing some lovely jazz music with his Jazz Falcons. The band line up was Kevin Grenfell (band leader, trombone, vocals), Gethen Liddington (trumpet), Vic Partridge (banjo, guitar), Mike Green (double bass), and Steve Street (drums).

Playing up-tempo jazz numbers such as ‘Shine’ and ‘Royal Garden Blues’, and then slowing the pace down with a superb trombone feature on the tune ‘Blue Moon’ to ‘Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans’. There was also a good solid rhythm section during the evening from Vic on banjo and guitar, Mike on double bass and Steve on drums, not forgetting some fine individual trumpet riffs from Gethen. Kevin produced a great impromptu vocal to ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ though he was accompanied by the audience. The band ended with a fine medley of jazz tunes, from ‘When the Saints’ to ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’.

On to next Wednesday the 30th September, when we welcome from Holland, the Storyville Jass Band, so we hope to see you then.

Hi Jazzers

It was the first time performance of Trudgeons Troubadours from Bristol at Sutton Coldfield Trad Jazz Club, and I have a feeling it will not be the last. The line- up was Joe Trudgeon (band leader, guitar, vocals), Lewis Taylor (trumpet, vocals), Dave Shulman (clarinet, tenor saxophone), Tom Whittingham (trombone, miniature cymbals), guest from New Orleans Ryan Sullivan (banjo, vocals) and Mike ‘Spike’ Kennedy (double bass).

This was trad jazz at its finest, with great tempo and the band playing supremely well together. Their performance gave slower numbers such as ‘Old Fashioned Love’, and ‘My Walking Stick’, to up- tempo tunes including ‘My Gal Sal’ and a great stomping version of ‘Tiger Rag’. Dave on clarinet featured on ‘Up the Lazy River’ and the band ended a fine trad jazz evening with the appropriate ‘Show me the way to go home’.

Next Wednesday, the 23rd September. we shall be welcoming back the effervescent Kevin Grenfell with his Jazz Falcons so we hope to see you. Until then take care and be good to yourself and to others.

Hi Jazzers

Those of us lucky enough to be at Sutton Coldfield Trad Jazz Club last night were well and truly ‘spanked ‘by the lovely tempos and rhythms of the Easy Street Spankers. The band members were Peter Childes (band leader, clarinet, vocals), Wil Robinson (trumpet), Dave Deakin (trombone), Chris Bramall (double bass), Al Harris (guitar, banjo, vocals), and Rob Cotterell (drums).

We were treated to some lovely tunes and a surprise when Pete took a great vocal turn on the Charlie Chaplin melody, ‘Smile’. The band performed a rousing version of ’It’s nobody’s fault but mine’ and a super interpretation of two Fats Waller tunes, ‘Just a Gigolo’ and ‘Fair and Square in Love’. There was a magnificent clarinet feature by Pete with ‘Burgundy Street Blues, ably supported by the rhythm section, and the band completed a fine jazz evening with an up-tempo and aptly named tune, ‘Get out of here and go on home’.

Next Wednesday the 16th September, we welcome for the first time at our Jazz Club, Trudgeons Troubadours, and I have been reliably informed they are magnificent.

Hi Jazzers

On an Autumnal rainy evening we were treated to a good mixture of jazz by the ever-youthful Tad Newton who has been leading his band for many years. The line-up was Tad Newton (band leader, trombone, vocals), Gary Wood (trumpet,), Allen Horton (piano), Richard Exhall (clarinet, tenor saxophone), Ronnie Fern (drums), and Tomas Pedersen (double bass).

There was a mixture of modern, big band, traditional, blues and Bossa nova numbers, with fine individual solos as evidenced by Richard on saxophone with an Errol Garner tune, ‘Misty’, Allen on piano with a great medley of ‘Blue Moon’ and ‘Keeping out of Mischief Now’. We must also mention a fine quartet when Gary on trumpet and Allen on piano gave us ‘Bad Penny Blues’, which was the first British jazz tune to enter the pop charts in the 1950’s. The band finished with a song we all joined in with, ‘You are my Sunshine’.

Next Wednesday the 9th September, we shall be entertained by the Easy Street Spankers. This band started life as the New Toledo Jazz Band, renamed to Easy Street Jazz Band and again finally to its current format. We look forward to seeing you all.

Hi Jazzers

On a Stormy night we were thoroughly entertained by the laid-back Rich Bennett, the band leader of Rich Bennett New Orleans All Stars. Played with a great rhythm and tempo the songs and tunes were appreciated and great for both the dancers and listeners. The band line-up was Rich Bennett (band leader, trumpet, vocals), Zoltan Sagi (alto saxophone), Graham Woodhouse (trombone), Simon Smith (double bass), Warren James (guitar, banjo, vocals), and a welcome return after his recent operation Nick Ward (drums).

The band blew up a storm on several numbers including a hot version of ‘Rosetta’ vocalised by Rich and later ‘Hot Tamales’ with vocals by Warren. The band switched effortlessly between hot jazz numbers and romantic ballads such as ‘My silent Love’ sung by Rich and also ‘On a Dreamers Holiday’ sung by Warren. The band played a lovely jazzy version of Nat King Cole’s ‘Rambling Rose’ featuring Zoltan on alto saxophone. A Great jazz evening ended with Fats Waller’s ‘Fair and Square in Love’. Perfect.

Next Wednesday, 3rd September 2026, we shall be listening to the dulcet jazz tunes from the ever-ready Tad Newton Jazz Friends, so we hope to see you there. Take care good jazzers.

Hi Jazzers

We were entertained last night by Washington Whirligigg at our Sutton Coldfield Trad Jazz Club. The band line-up was David Hepworth (band leader, clarinet, tenor saxophone), Liz Hepworth (double bass, vocals), Andy Bramall (banjo, guitar, vocals), Simon James (trumpet,) and Rob Cotterell (drums).

We had a jazz mixture of some trad, New Orleans, big band and blues tunes to entertain us, with good guitar riff from Andy and his vocals on the song, ‘Girl of my Dreams’. There was another guitar riff on the nicely timed tempo song, ‘Pennies from Heaven’ sung for us by Liz and she also sang the vocals on ‘Summertime’ where Andy on guitar brought in a riff from Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ which was an interesting inclusion with good effect. We enjoyed some up - tempo songs including ‘Down in H***y Tonk Town’, ‘Dark Town Strutters Ball’ and ‘Bei Mir Bista Du Shein’ which the band concluded the evening with, featuring an excellent drum solo from Andy.

Next Wednesday 26th August 2026, we shall be entertained by Rich Bennett’s New Orleans All Stars, so we hope to see you then. Stay safe and keep jazzing.
