“ A Thin Place”
Earth Pigments on linen with stitch

This calm delicate piece has been getting a lot of attention this week. Visitors have commented on the soft colour palette and glow of the hand stitched elements.

It is beautiful framed in a hand stained wood to complement the work.

A “thin place” has from the Celtic tradition been associated with a place that has a sense of peace and transcendence.

Where is your “Thin Place”?

Easing back!

Coming back to my practice after a long festive break is exciting. What will the new year hold?

To ease back I’m getting some organisational jobs completed. I’ve been attaching several finished textile pieces to their stretcher bars so they’ll be ready to drop off for framing. It’s a methodical job that when your in “flow” can be interrupting but when you want to keep working and allow space to think and plan is very rewarding.

Let me know how you’re easing back.

Thank you 2024!

Isn’t it amazing when you look back over the year and see all the things you’ve done and achieved; the wonderful people you’ve met and those that have supported you along the way?

This year has been brought many new challenges, explorations in new materials and so many opportunities to expand and grow. I am so grateful for the collaborations and exhibitions I’ve taken part in.

I’m looking forward to 2025 and seeing you sometime soon.

WIP

This piece is nearly there!

It’s diluted oak gall ink on wet strength tissue paper which has been folded to create areas where the ink can pool.

After drying I’ve stitched into the paper with silver and gold thread. It’s staring to shimmer like leaves catching the autumn light.

I’m looking forward to seeing where this piece takes me. Sometime you just have to play and respond.

Have you been trying out something new?

WAYS OF WORKING

Do you find that some of your paintings take time to become what they need to be?

This painting has been elusive for some time. I laid down the earth pigment and soya milk binder a couple of months ago and then as it dried and cured I’ve been contemplating what the next step would be.

I loved the simplicity of the surface with its variation of subtle marks and initially I thought I would work with the piece in the vertical portrait format, but something kept pulling me back to looking at it in the landscape format.

This week I decided to layer it with stitch. Using deep red and silver thread it has called to become a second “Thin Place” piece (see my previous posts).

I’m finding that working with stitch has required me to make space for time. Time to sit calmly and quietly with a concentration that focuses the mind on a singular task. When painting I’ll often have music or a podcast on to distract my critical thinking, this is a completely different way of working.

Do you have parts of your practice that require you to work in a different way? How do they manifest? Let me know in the comments.

I will be posting the finished piece soon.

Day 9

This one I’m calling “The Dance of the Trees!”

I’ve used pale oak gall ink with small amounts of deeper toned ink added to some of the brush strokes and allowed to flow and disperse within the shapes. A sprinkling of iron sulphate created speckles in some of the of the marks.

I love the simplicity of using one medium and exploring what I can create with different tools or an intention in mind whilst painting.

In this pieces the marks have space to breathe in the areas of white paper. They almost seem to them shimmer. There is a sense of converging or separating.

The movement of the lines remind me of letting go and dancing without a care. Of being amongst the trees.
