Happy Independence Day to both and the community. It is a strange thing, a day of celebrating independence as well as dividing one beautiful country into 2.
For some, it’s flags, celebrations and pride for a new beginning, as India took responsibility for governing itself and shaping its own future.
For some, it’s remembering grandparents, old stories and everything that was lost along the way, especially by the division of Punjab and Bengal (a few years later) themselves, triggering one of the largest and most traumatic mass migrations in modern history, with enormous loss of life.
For some, it’s a complicated mix of both.
Because history isn’t always something you can neatly celebrate. Sometimes it carries joy and grief in the same breath.
And perhaps that’s what today is really about — remembering where we came from, appreciating the freedom we inherited, and recognising that the story of a country is never as simple as a date on a calendar.
Whatever today means to you, I hope there’s space for both pride and reflection.
