Six Teen Edition - Dynamique Arts
I love Six the Musical, so when we were invited to see Six we were so excited! The original show is very grown-up, and I wasn’t sure how it would translate to a younger cast, but these young performers took to the stage and delivered an extremely impressive performance! We were absolutely astounded by the professionalism and talent displayed. Every single cast member gave 100% and seemed so comfortable on the stage. Not one of the songs are easy, and the show only works if the cast give it the energy and attitude it needs - and wow did this cast deliver just that! Six was perfectly cast, each queen giving a really authentic performance.
In the role of Catherine of Aragon, Ava Hutchinson wowed the audience with her incredible stage presence. Ava is absolutely fearless, and a true triple threat. She embodied the queen with sass, but every single word was heard, every move was hit, and Ava delivered a truly exceptional performance of a professional standard. Her voice is amazing, her physicality is spectacular, and she always moves with purpose. An absolute standout!
Playing the hilarious role of Anne Boleyn was Cassie Hide, who showed an impressive display of humour, skill, and raw talent. Her stage presence is to be awed and her delivery of ‘Don’t Lose Your Head’ was as good as some professional shows I’ve seen. Cassie had bags of confidence, brilliant comedic timing, great moves, and an impressive vocal!
Jane Seymour was played by Heidi Dowling, who delivered a gorgeously heartfelt rendition of ‘Heart of Stone’. Her confidence onstage is amazing for her young age, and she hit those belt notes with ease. Seymour is one of the more emotional roles in the show, and Heidi handled this delicately, and with tact - but also gave it some sass! A very elegant and poised performance.
Controversially, my favourite character in the show is Anne of Cleves, and Evie Duggan brought all the attitude! Evie commanded the stage and brought the house down with electrifying energy and dance moves. ‘Get Down’ is an incredibly tricky song, and those low notes can sometimes be lost, but Evie made sure every word was crystal clear and did incredible justice to the song!
As Katherine Howard, Emma Spargo found the perfect balance between the young naive girl, and the powerful queen. With extremely impressive vocals, she showed her character development in her song, ‘All You Wanna Do’ beautifully. Emmas vocal is very well controlled, and she hit every note with ease, and charisma. She sustained the power of her vocal throughout, and didn’t falter once. Emma was confident, sassy, and gave a great performance.
As the final queen, Catherine Parr, Evie Rutherford delivered a masterclass in vocal control, riffs, and vibrato. Her voice is developed far beyond her years and I noticed this right from her first line in the opening number. She effortlessly went from note to note, singing this very difficult song like it was nothing. Even her speaking voice is crystal clear, as she helped to explain the story with the other queens. Her vocal is truly exceptional, and it will definitely take her very far.
The featured dancers - Gabrielle Crosby, Macie Sinclair, Maisie Gofton, Melody Hunt, Lily MgGee, and Gabriele Labeikyte - were the perfect accompaniment to the queens, providing superb back-up both vocally, and in dance. I was dubious about an ensemble in a show that usually doesn’t have one, but the incredible performers we saw this evening did not hinder the performance, but instead enhanced it even further. The incredible ensemble, comprising of Harriet Marsh, Molly Leigh Thomson, Maddie Clamp, Evie Hetherington, Skylar Weatherhead, Sophie Murray, Molly Tench, Nina Bailey, Amelie Corner, Lilly Laing, Elise Goldsmith, Victoria Gale, Chelsea Barker, Mollie Jones, Callum Whitte-Richens, and Abigail Higgins, were absolutely amazing. They were in character every second, bringing attitude and exceptional dancing.
I am truly awed and impressed by this cast. Six was put together beautifully with full out choreography and staging, but the talent of the young performers was the standout for me. I wouldn’t be surprised to see several names from tonight’s show on the west end one day. I can’t wait to see what’s next for these superstars!
