✨Throwback Thursday! ✨

This week we are celebrating one year since the completion of our Blandford Street Mural in collaboration with and 🙌

‘Sea Sun Jewellery and pathways’

Here’s some information about the piece…
Using the extensive history of the area, we wanted to create a thread that links the past with the future.
The ever existing presence of jewellers on the street are referenced with a nod and so to is the link to pathways as the new station is about to open attracting new footfall opportunities to a once busy shopping area as it starts to re-imagine its immediate future.
The past and present become connected with a reemerging feeling of vibrancy for a once a bustling trade destination, as it starts to feel like the sun shines on it once more.
It is worth mentioning the choice of colour pallet.
Engagement sessions with local businesses - facilitated by local agency Creo Comms - uncovered a preference for a Mondrian style approach which signalled a hope for a brighter and better future.

Get ready for an adrenaline rush at Urban Fest in Sunniside Gardens on 7 & 8 September!
From 11 AM on Saturday and Sunday, enjoy street art workshops with Art of Protest Projects, pro skateboard and BMX stunts by King Ramps and 3Sixty, and fun activities like Sally Anderson’s “Re-vamp Your Old Skateboard” and the Darke Cycles Bicycle Repair Workshop.
Groove to DJ music, savour street food and watch interactive street dance battles. All ages are welcome! Don’t miss out!

Krillustrates X Sunderland Arts & Culture Trail X Future Walls
What a morning we have had pasting up the iconic Rebel Women of Sunderland works by local artist Kathryn Robertson.

Marion Phillips was Sunderland’s first female MP. She was a fierce feminist who wanted working-class people to enjoy their lives.

Millfield-born Ida & Louise Cook saved 29 people from N**i Germany.

Lauren Laverne, is a popular radio DJ, model, television presenter, author and singer from Sunderland.

Emeli Sande was born and raised in Sunderland, she has performed at concert halls, festivals and awards ceremonies across the world, including the London 2012 Olympics. She has won 4 Brit Awards and an MBE.

Florence Collard was living in Plymouth when her husband was called up to fight in WWII. She returned to her home in Sunderland, where she joined other women on the shipyards.

Katharine Backhouse was a Quaker involved in the anti-slavery movement, raising awareness of the human cost of sugar, cotton and rum, shipped from slave plantations in the West Indies and sold in Sunderland grocery shops.

A new addition to the group of Rebel Women of Sunderland is Faye Fantarrow; so watch this space...

Faye Fantarrow Forever

It was an honour to help .illustrates paint this beautiful mural, in memory of the amazing Faye.

Here are some words from Kathryn about the mural…

“Shortly after Faye passed away I pasted up an illustration of her opposite Pop Recs, we had worked together on various projects over the years and I wanted to do one more thing to honour Faye in illustration form.
The outpouring of love and appreciation for that was amazing, people left flowers for Faye and signed with messages to her. We knew we had to make the piece permanent.
Thank you to Faye’s family, and to all at Sunderland BID, Future Walls, We Make Culture for supporting this and helping to make it a permanent piece, it means a lot to a lot of people.”

🙌Blandford street is looking bright 🙌
walls is bringing the vibes to Sunderland just in time for summer...

Last week we brought some more colour to Blandford by giving the benches some life!

Staying with a similar design as the large mural and hoarding, the street is now becoming a beautiful, bright, patterned area of Sunderland where you can be immersed in art from all areas.

We hope everyone is loving the way Blandford street is looking just as much as we are!

🌟 Alice is our local superstar Talent Development based down the road in Washington. She is a skilled graphic designer with a flare for creativity.

📷 We saw her awe-inspiring skills when she photographed the first Postman exhibition and Sunderland pride. Alice then went on to photograph the Blandford Street mural.

📣 She’s not only fantastic with the camera but also has the gift of the gab and has gone from strength to strength, delivering her first street art drop-in sessions at the Sunderland Food and Drink Festival.

🥳 We are so incredibly proud to say she is part of the AOP team. Alice fed back to us “It’s so wonderful seeing life be bought back into Sunderland and the North East. It’s exciting to capture this with locals, telling our story, and its Sunderland’s time to shine!”
