It is with deep sadness that we inform you about the passing of Margaret Hammond, who sadly passed away on the 7th September 2021.

Margaret was an amazing warm hearted woman, who touched many lives.

She was involved in the deafseeus project and was a poignant character in telling jovial stories about her life.

Our hearts go out to Margaret’s family, and her close friends at this difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts.

About Deaf See Us Project

Click Click Club was set up in April 2017 by a group of deaf photographers who all use British Sign Language (BSL) as their first language. Deaf See Us Project is an attempt to give the audience a glimpse in Deaf people’s amazing lives touching on trials and tribulations pertaining to the older deaf community.

We all believe everyone has a story to tell in relation to their experiences, and these stories are the invaluable fund of deaf history and heritage. We feel if we do not capture their story it may be too late. Deaf children now are mainly mainstreamed in education, and the sense of deaf history and heritage is slowly diminishing. We feel we owe it to the future deaf generation to be able to showcase some of local deaf history, not just to the younger generations but to the wider community too. We also feel connecting with deaf people of Sunderland will validate their experiences, in terms of how they lived, and finally making them feel heard.

The project entailed meeting with older deaf people and showcasing their story via the medium of photography. We also filmed 9 deaf older people using British Sign Language, asking them to account some of their poignant experiences growing up, and what it means to them to be deaf in Sunderland.

A book will be released soon and is unique in the fact that it is bi-lingual with British Sign Language videos via QRs. The videos will also have subtitles and voice over.
