Mill Tye Gallery

Mill Tye Gallery Mill Tye is a small, independent gallery. It’s housed in a beautiful brick-built mill. One that’s been converted into a light, airy studio-exhibition space.

One with spectacular views across the river Stour and water meadows. Mill Tye Gallery and Art Centre is set by the idyllic River Stour in Great Cornard, just outside the centre of the historic market town of Sudbury, Suffolk. The historic mill building has spectacular views across the river Stour and water meadows for several miles beyond. Here at Mill Tye Gallery, we will host monthly exhibitions

of local contemporary artists, printmakers, sculptors and potters. Our aim is to celebrate new talent and provide a platform for undiscovered artists from across the region. The mill building also houses a contemporary open space, which lends itself well to courses, art classes and a photographic studio and is available for hire. Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Stour Valley has been infamously portrayed by artists John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough, and as such, the area is renowned as a hub for talented creatives.

Featured Artist: Max Angus

We're delighted to be exhibiting a selection of exceptionally rare lino-cut prints by renowned printmaker Max Angus, including this beautiful work, 'I Was Looking for You'.

Inspired by two nuthatches spotted by the artist in Sandringham, Norfolk, this striking image was created using a four-block lino-cut process, showcasing Max's distinctive skill and eye for the natural world.

This print is particularly special as it is believed to be the last framed edition available, with possibly only one unframed print remaining in the artist's own collection.
To view this rare and collectable work in person, visit Mill Tye Gallery, open Thursday–Sunday, 10.30am–4pm.

Mill Tye Gallery is located on the Gainsborough Trail from Sudbury's Friars Meadow — just a 20-minute walk along the beautiful River Stour.

Artist Demonstration Today at Mill Tye Gallery

We are delighted to welcome visitors to Mill Tye Gallery today as our June Artist in Residence, Rowan Collinson, shares insights into her creative practice through a live demonstration of her cyanotype and natural tea-staining processes.

The demonstration offers a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the techniques behind Rowan’s exhibition, A Field Study: Documenting Four Seasons, which documents a single field close to her home over the course of a year. Through careful observation and sustainable photographic processes, Rowan explores the subtle transformations of the natural world, inviting us to look more closely at the landscapes we often take for granted.

Today also coincides with the Sudbury Artists Open Studios Trail 2026, bringing visitors from across the region to discover the incredible creativity and talent that exists within our local artistic community.

It has been wonderful to see so many conversations taking place around the exhibition, with visitors sharing their own experiences of nature, photography, and place. One of the joys of exhibiting contemporary artists is the opportunity not only to view finished works but also to gain an understanding of the ideas, materials, and processes that bring them into being.

If you’re exploring the Open Studios Trail this weekend, there’s still time to visit. Come and discover Rowan’s thoughtful and beautifully crafted exhibition, meet fellow art lovers, and enjoy a warm welcome at Mill Tye Gallery.

What happens when contemporary textile art meets traditional weaving?

We are delighted to announce that award-winning textile artist Amber Lily, winner of the Colour in Design Award 2023, will be joining Helena Powell as a Featured Collaborator throughout Hand Woven Landscapes: From Mill to Loom this summer at Mill Tye Gallery.

Amber's contemporary textile practice is celebrated for its bold use of colour, texture and mark-making, creating abstract works inspired by the overlooked details of everyday life. Sustainability sits at the heart of her practice, with recycled and repurposed materials transformed into richly layered textile artworks.

The exhibition will include a special collection of collaborative works created by Amber and Helena, combining Helena's hand-dyed yarns, woven silk samples and traditional weaving expertise with Amber's distinctive approach to colour, print, stitch and collage.

These unique collaborative pieces will be exhibited together for the first time, with selected works available for purchase. We are incredibly excited to bring these two talented textile artists together for what promises to be a vibrant and inspiring summer exhibition.
