Word Habit

Word Habit Live Poetry & Spoken Word in Sudbury, Suffolk, UK Word Habit is an afternoon of live poetry and spoken word, usually at The Brewery Tap, Sudbury, Suffolk.

Word Habit is hosted by poet, musician, artist, and DJ, James Domestic. Entry is free. This is NOT an open mic event. There are plenty of those around. Each poet usually has a 20 minute slot. To perform at Word Habit you will need to be booked by the promoter, James Domestic (he will probably book you if he likes what you do, so show him!)

You should aim to arrive around 1:30pm to ensure that you

don’t miss the first poet on stage. Many – but not all – of the poets at Word Habit are published, and books will be available for purchase at the event. Word Habit is usually finished by 5pm. Well behaved children and dogs are generally allowed at The Brewery Tap (although, be warned that you may not consider all themes suitable for children’s ears…dog’s ears I’m not so sure about)

STATEMENT:

Hi All

It's with a heavy heart that I must report that, unfortunately, I’ve decided to cancel the two remaining Word Habit events (17th August and 28th September) of 2025.

There are various reasons for this: I think the past couple of years have proved – despite attendance being pretty strong early on – that the venue (despite being a cracking pub!) perhaps isn’t right for spoken word. Possibly the time and day of the week are wrong too! 😆 Despite me having booked some amazing poets from around the country, it’s just not supported well enough now to make it viable. Perhaps Sudbury just doesn’t want a regular poetry event!

Perhaps Word Habit will return next year in a different venue on a different day of the week, but I need to take some time away from it and take stock.

Anyone that’s been booked will of course take priority for booking if Word Habit is reanimated in 2026, and even if it isn’t, I hope to work with you in some capacity, even if it’s not Word Habit as such.

Apologies to the faithful, but there just aren't enough of you to make this work in its current form.

James
