UNDERDOG - MEET THE CAST

JAMES MCGRATH | BRANWELL BRONTË / ENSEMBLE

James McGrath is thrilled to be joining the cast of Underdog as Branwell Brontë, returning to the stage after his last role as the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz back in January. Previous roles include Rolf in The Sound of Music and the piano playing Scripps in The History Boys, all with the Cotswold Players.

Meet Anne Brontë – aka Acton Bell.

Anne Brontë was never the loudest voice in the room - but perhaps she was the bravest. Underdog: The Other, Other Brontë shines a light on the sister history too often leaves in the shadows: a fearless writer who challenged social injustice and questioned convention.

This moving new play by Sarah Gordon brings Anne out of the shadows onto centre stage and reminds us that sometimes, the most powerful voice is the one that speaks with quiet conviction.

LIZZY LEACH | CHARLOTTE BRONTË

Lizzy has been actively involved with local amateur companies since 2017. This is Lizzy’s fifth production with the Cotswold Players. Roles include: F***y Squires and the Infant Phenomenon, The Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (Cotswold Players); Hermione, The Winter’s Tale; Ariel, The Tempest; Olivia, Twelfth Night (all with the Cotswold Arcadians).

Sophia is a Stroud based actor who has been involved in a variety of productions in the local area. FLORENCE SIMPSON | EMILY BRONTË

Florence has been an actor since 2017 when she played Eliza Doolittle in Hexagon Theatre’s adaptation of Pygmalion. Since then Florence has attended Bristol School of Acting and has performed onstage in Stroud and Bristol and alongside Adam Horovitz in his production ‘Remembrances’ at Cheltenham Poetry Festival.

SALLY LAW | ENSEMBLE

Sally has been a member of the Cotswold Players for many years. In the last couple of years she has been involved in a variety plays playing a diverse range of characters. These have included: Maxine in Stepping Out with Wotton Dramatic Society; Frau Schmidt in The Sound of Music; Aunty Em and a multitude of other characters, in The Wizard of Oz; and has just finished playing Sally the ’domestic operative’ (cleaner) in JTP Theatre’s production of It’s What Matters.

Underdog: The Other, Other Brontë paints Emily Brontë as far more than the elusive author of Wuthering Heights. Fiercely independent, intensely private, and unapologetically herself, Emily is uninterested in society’s expectations or literary fame.

Sarah Gordon’s fast paced new play encourages us to believe that silence and stoicism shouldn’t be mistaken for weakness but that loyalty doesn’t always win out in the end.
