Gloucestershire Youth Players

Gloucestershire Youth Players GYP is a theatre company for young people 16-25. We aim to bring invigorating versions of Shakespear

The group benefits young actors from all over the county, giving them an insight into public theatre, professionally organised and directed. It is the only such group, along with the Gloucestershire Young Shakespeare Theatre sister group, that performs solely Shakespeare, usually uncut, and always unprompted, in this region. Using experience with the group as a launching pad, many of our company have in the past been able to gain places at Drama schools as well as placements within the industry.

We had all of our actors together in once place for the first time yesterday!

After the shock of realising we all have bodies away from just our heads and shoulders, we braved the British Summertime and cracked on with rehearsals!

Four hours in a park and a variety of fascinated public faces later, we had laid down blocking and managed two run throughs.

It may have been the first time we came together in person but we certainly used the time well!

More photos to come as we progress through the process. Please do check out our website for more information on the show ‘From Age to Age’ and to buy tickets!

GYP is back in play!
We’re touring from the 14th-25th of July 2021.

This year is treading a slightly different track to previous seasons as we are working with our sister company, Dramestics, but rest assured that The Bard is still very much in the bones…

So without further ado, may we present:

From Age to Age

The common adage is that William Shakespeare sheds a light upon every conceivable human experience and provides us with a universality with which we may all identify. Certainly, his poetry can strike a chord with many, and evoke the whole gamut of emotional responses, much like music.

Over thirty years, a son and father with a shared love of Shakespeare, imparted to the younger by the older, write to one another about the common, sometimes overlapping, events of their lives.

Over the decades, they thread their nuanced, often unspoken emotions through the lines they pen, never openly acknowledging their feelings other than through inflection and choice of vocabulary; and yet each knows the other.

Here we present these poems, some for the first time: a literary, personal and intimate conversation interwoven with a few monologues from their favourite lyricist, Shakespeare.

Be prepared to hear words from Hamlet, Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear and Much Ado About Nothing amongst others, and to share in this intergenerational journey, a veritable whirligig of time.

A little about the company:

Dramestics is a company with a cast of professional actors who bring classical plays and brand new writing directly to you. Liven up any event with exciting and innovative takes on old favourites or original plays in any setting, whether it be a house, barn, garden or pub.

You don’t go to the theatre, the theatre comes to you!

For anyone who has an event or space that would be enhanced with a live performance of this piece or another, please do get in touch via dm, email, or through the website of GYP or Dramestics!

Looking for a fix of independent theatre? Have a look at the Stroud Theatre Festival!

A magical mix of colourful creative clout, exploding into Gloucestershire across a fun filled weekend.

Supporting creative hearts and minds is a wonderful thing to do, especially if they’re local!

Never knew that Jim from school could act? That Ellen down the road was a wonderful mime artist? That Bob’s cat’s mother’s owner Jane could still a room using just words and presence?
These types of events let you find things out about the community you live in and breathe life into them in a way that is important but also truly full of wonder and joy.

This video gives you a taste of the delights on offer, for more information head over to their website:
