We are a collective of independent art teachers based in Gloucestershire offering workshops, courses, and one-to-one instruction to people of all ages and experience levels at local venues and at our own studios. Alexandra Darbyshire / Painting

Alexandra graduated from OCAD University’s fine arts programme in Toronto in 1992, and she has taught painting to people of all ages and experience levels

since 2001. Her painting reflects versatility in technique and subject matter, and she takes pride in sharing this depth of knowledge as an art instructor. In doing so, she inspires her students to explore and find the approach that best suits their own creativity, since no two people paint the same way. Her teaching ethos focuses on putting students at ease, and giving them the confidence to tackle the art making process by way of step-by-step demonstrations, and hands-on guidance. Having graduated in Fine Art from Goldsmiths’ University in the 1980s Susan has recently completed an MA in Drawing for Fine Art Practice from Oxford Brookes University. Working mainly on paper using a variety of drawing materials she has come to value this simple, direct way to make images. Daily walks with her dog through the fields and woods in the vicinity of the studio in Quarhouse provide inspiration and when the weather is not so good the many objects and images collected over the years provide source material for work. Susan is looking forward to continuing her freelance teaching commitments through the development of courses and workshops in the Five Valley’s area.

Susan Kester has updated her website at www.susankester.co.uk with details of workshops and classes: One day workshops 10th and/or 25th August at Victoria Works Studios and The Subscription Rooms, plus details for the Drawn to Look classes from week commencing 6 September at Victoria Works Studios, The Painswick Centre and Pegasus Art. There is a new Wednesday class starting at Subscription Rooms too. Any queries either leave a message here or contact Susan through the website.

Drawn to Look Classes start again next week: The Painswick Centre remains as a Zoom class Wednesday morning 9.30-12 noon, Victoria Works Studios back in Studio 21 Thursday morning 9.30-12 noon and Pegasus Art back in the Attic Studio Thursday 6.30-8.30pm. Online 'Drawn to Look' classes have now been up and running since late March. Many thanks to all the students who have continued to be involved. It has been a real surprise how successful and enjoyable they have turned out to be - and what a lovely little community we have established in each group. Even people from as far afield as South Bristol and Nottingham have joined in now - which has been an added bonus. Here are some examples of some of the fantastic drawings that have been produced. Anyone who thinks they might be interested in joining in for June, leave a message here, or PM for more information. Drawn to Look Online drawing classes with Susan Kester have been running now for a month. The results testify to the success and hard work of the students. Zoom is enabling a lovely feeling of community to develop and WhatsApp gives the opportunity for an ongoing live critique during the class. We are about to embark on another month in anticipation of life remaining pretty much the same as now in terms of group activities. Anyone wishing to join a class on either Wednesday morning 9.30-noon, or Thursday evening 6.30-8.30 (Thursday morning is full, sorry) contact me here or through my website www.susankester.co.uk for more information. Carrying on with the domestic theme and enjoying looking at the everyday here are some examples of this week's on-line replacement drawing classes Victoria Works Studios, Pegasus Art and The Painswick Centre. We are missing the real thing, but Zoom, WhatsApp, email and phone all in combination seem to be working well for everyone. I'm feeling a little shattered from the experience but the plus side is my IT skills must be improving!!
