Vintage AKG D12E on kick duty. I usually pair it with a Neumann U47 valve as my kick out mics, and both pick up low end thud, which is the blend I’m after. A Shure Beta 52A goes inside the drum. Old mic, still doing its job.

A-no cymbals drum recording, for overdubbing later, can allow you to do powerful things with the drums in the mix and, more importantly, I can finally mute the hi-hat completely!

Sizzle and Smack!

My favourite close mic snare combo: a beyerdynamic M201 dynamic paired with a vintage Neumann Gefell MV 692 condenser with an M94 capsule. I’ve used these as a pair for years and love the way they complement each other. The M201 brings the smack, the MV 692 brings the sizzle.

The track is Swedish Death Candy “Journey to the 13th Floor”. We recorded this banger back in 2019 and I’m still so proud of the sound I got for this record.

Fuzzy family portrait. Just a few of my faves. Death By Audio Fuzz War and Bass War either side of a Foxx Tone Machine.

The Tone Machine was one of the first pedals I bought, but the two DBA pedals come out for the heavy lifting. Fuzz War for guitars and anything that needs to be torn to bits, Bass War when the low end needs some teeth without losing the bottom.

What’s your goto fuzz?

I love recording vintage valve amps, there is nothing like it. They all sound so different and bring so much to a record and a performance!

We have my 60s Ampeg B15N, Marshall JMP, Fender Twin, not really vintage but an Orange Tiny Terror, and another Orange and Marshall head but I don’t recall what models these were.

It was such a privilege to mix Peel, the latest single from Philippe. Reposted from Philippe, lovely words on the mix from an incredible artist! Be good to yourselves and immerse yourselves in the gravity and emotion of the song. I hope you get as much from listening to it as I did from mixing it.

“Peeeeeeel yourself back. Those crusted layers of fake-living. Scratch if you must but you don’t have to. Its an urgent plea of anti-violence. Its a welcome home kind of eroticism. Nature says shut the * up.

I wanted to sing some praise for TobinJones_TPS on this one who’s mix I think is brave and playful. The intro is quieter than it ‘should’ be and the cellos are so powerful without loosing the vocals. The tonality of the drums played by Mike Monaghan are edible; if only our ears had teeth. He’s a wizard and he’s actually starting to look like one. Sitting in with him to mix this tune was such a great experience. I left his studio with a noticeable sense of rare peace thinking this is going to sound as best as it can, i can relax. Id been learning while he did his thing, talking me through his process and showing me how I could up my game on the DAWs but with over 25 years experience engineering and running studios imagine all the sound he’s processed in that time! He took the raw sounds we recorded at shakenoakstudios and attuned his emotionometer to all that was hidden. Lots of music these days, in my opinion, is clumsily mixed to sound big and loud and impressive which smells a lot like patriarchy in spirit to me. I love loud music don’t get me wrong, there’s just a way of doing it. Subtle and skillful and thats what Tobin’s approach is. I’m hugely appreciative of the time and energy he put into mixing Peel and the whole album. We discovered new dynamics and I really believe we got the absolute best out of the sound that Chris Barker engineered so brilliantly at Shaken Oak. Both are soo good to work with so if you’re looking for engineers, mixes or even some producer energy you should get in touch. X

Three ways to make a signal repeat itself, all sat within arm’s reach. Watkins Copicat for the saturation, Melos Echo Chamber for the grit, Roland Space Echo when I want it “slightly cleaner.”

Tape delay fun with . I’m not sure when this was but it was at some point in the last 9 years 😂

I love tape delays, and have several which each bring their own unique flavour, from the Wem Copycat to the Melos tape cartridge delay.

This is my Roland RE-501 Space Echo, which sounds incredible, and as you can tell from the video, brings so much joy to any mixing session!

This is one of my favourite guitar pedals of all time, anyone know what it is?

I use it a lot when tracking guitars but also as outboard when mixing.
Having pedals set up to run other instruments or vocals through can really add a lot to the mix. It’s also super fun!
