Soumik Datta Arts A creative hub that started with Soumik Datta & his sarod. We tell stories through music & more. We make art for/with/about human journeys beyond borders.

Through cross-disciplinary collaborations with other artists - musicians, singers, dancers and image makers - we champion impactful and moving new work. At the heart of our artistic drive is Soumik Datta, an award-winning British-Bengali sarod player, electronic composer, TV presenter, winner of the 2022 Aga Khan Music Award and an official Ambassador for Earth Day Network. We have won many awards for our work, including the 2021 British Council Commission for Climate Change.

Before 'Jangal' became an album, it was the Sundarbans. 🌳
Directed by my brother , 'Jangal' was shaped by a forest that found its way into every frame and every note. 💚

Created out of a deep concern for our disappearing forests, 'Jangal' feels just as relevant today as it did 7 years ago. 🐯🌱

Thrilled to be joining DAYTIMERS for their takeover of Whitechapel Gallery. I’ll be performing an intimate set from 8 to 8:45pm this Saturday 8 August, completely free.

It’s a summer night show in the heart of one of London’s most exciting galleries, and we’ve worked closely with their lighting team to build a real sonic cocoon around the music. These small, close settings are where Indian classical music truly breathes and can hold an audience, and you’ll get to feel every exchange between sarod and tabla up close.

Joined by one of the UK’s most exciting tabla players and a dear friend, Shahbaz Hussain. Come find us in the Assembly Room and let the ragas wrap around you.

Seven years ago I made an album called Jangal. It came from a completely different place in my life, a different version of me, chasing different sounds, asking different questions of my music.

That album fell off the grid a year ago, and many of you reached out asking where it went.

Someone close to me recently told me that every seven years we become someone new, our cells replace themselves, our tastes shift, our questions change. Looking back at the person who made Jangal, I feel nothing but gratitude. He was figuring things out. And here I am seven years later, older, wiser but still doing the same.

So today, on World Tiger Day, Jangal comes home. Back on Spotify, Apple Music, and wherever you listen.

Thank you to everyone who walked with me from that album to the new one coming out this year. You know who you are. 🫂

🎧 The first single from ‘Melodies in Slow Motion’ is here.

Bees communicate through something extraordinary called the Waggle Dance 🐝 a figure eight movement scout bees perform when they return to the hive, telling the others exactly where and how far they’ve found nectar.

When we started working on this track, we imagined what that dance would actually sound like inside the hive. So the rhythm is dance inspired: fast, trance like. It takes a while for the main melodic hook to emerge from that intense rhythmic texture, and that’s deliberate, it lets the energy build. And of course, we knew that hook had to be inspired by the springtime raga Bahar 💐

There’s something fascinating about this hidden language, a reminder that the natural world is always speaking, if we know how to listen 🌸
