We're delighted to have two wood carved wall-based sculptures by Isle of Mull based artist Matthew Reade on display. Pictured is a beautifully organic piece titled 'Pebble Nest': one of two works by the artists currently on the wall in our red gallery space and available to purchase.

Raised on a farm in Somerset, Matthew has been carving wood since the age of eleven. Having spent decades immersed in the Isle of Mull's landscape, his craft is deeply intertwined with his coastal surroundings, drawing inspiration from the sea, hills, and shoreline. Working primarily with native Scottish hardwood - such as Wych Elm, Oak, Beech, and Ash - Reade takes a hands-on approach to every stage of his medium. The resulting pieces are both tactile and timeless.

Did you know the word for a circular work of art is a Tondo? Derived from the Italian rotondo (meaning round), this format gained popularity during the 15th-century Renaissance. While circular canvases aren't as common in contemporary art today, the circle plays a central role in Kirsty Lorenz Artist's solo show, Elemental Plants.

This wee corner of the exhibition illustrates how circular motifs recur across different forms:

Left: Remedy for a Heavy Heart — a true Tondo painted on a round circular panel.
Centre: Wood Betony — featuring a glowing circular halo background.
Right: Aura Suavis — arranged in a radial, circular botanical pattern.

Have you come across any other circular works of art?

Elemental Plants by Kirsty Lorenz is on display until 24th October and can also be viewed online via the gallery website.

It's always to lovely to catch up with artists in person. Our rural location doesn't always make that possible, but Glasgow based artist Michael Corsar paid us a visit last week to deliver a remarkable new selection of works.

Corsar's distinctive style starts from an almost black canvas. Primarily working in oils, he gradually teases out images, removing darkness and illuminating a scene. Working on the whole from memory, his paintings are reflections of inner thoughts and feelings at specific moments in time, rather than straightforward representations of an actual place.

'Grass of Parnassus, Ardnamurchan II' by Kirsty Lorenz, currently on display in the artist's solo show Elemental Plants.

Four years ago, during a period of intense personal challenge, Lorenz felt that her 20-year practice of painting flowers had lost its meaning, leading her to believe she was finished with painting altogether. A supportive friend offered her a respite stay in Portuairk, in Ardnamurchan. There, surrounded by the resilient wildflowers of the elemental landscape, she found renewed inspiration, laying the groundwork for this new collection.

We are delighted to be currently showing a selection of works by contemporary Scottish artist Lesley Burr RGI inspired by time spent as Arctic artist in residence.

A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Burr first gained national prominence in the 1980s as one of the “Glasgow Girls,” a pivotal movement that reinvigorated figurative art in Scotland.

Burr’s practice centres on symbolic landscapes that explore the profound inter-relationship between humans and the natural environment. Drawing inspiration from the rugged coasts of Western Scotland, the Shetland Isles, and the Arctic, her work balances a spacious simplicity with rich colour and deep narrative empathy.

In many ways, Kirsty Lorenz’s solo show Elemental Plants celebrates the evolution of an artist over a decade.

Too often, artists feel pressure to stick to a single path: afraid to step into the unknown. Lorenz’s collection is a triumph of true artistic freedom and creativity.

Swipe through to see how her work transforms across 10 years: from traditional, refined botanical portraiture to vibrant, deeply expressive explorations of our connection to nature and the wider environment.

View Elemental Plants in person and online via the gallery website (link in bio) until Saturday 24th October.

There is something absolutely charming about this almost dreamlike painting of a ringed plover by artist Ruth O'Dell. It's one of several newly arrived pieces by the artist currently on display in the gallery.

O'Dell's work evokes the intimate allure and vitality of Impressionist masters like Bonnard and Vuillard, offering a contemporary interpretation of this timeless artistic style.

As it's , we thought it would be the perfect time to talk about the inspiration behind the centrepiece of artist Kirsty Lorenz's solo show, Elemental Plants.

Lochan an Aoleann, Ardnamurchan takes inspiration, in part, from the poem Amo Ergo Sum by Kathleen Raine. Raine’s poetry often explores the divine interconnectedness of nature, mind, and spirit—echoing how the painting treats individual wild plants not just as botanical subjects, but as sacred fragments of a unified landscape.

Visually, the painting captures the distinct peatland biodiversity of the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Inspired by a small waterlily loch between Portuairk and Kilchoan, the piece blends meticulous botanical research with expressive intuition. Working from detailed structural drawings of local flora—including flowering Heather, Bog Asphodel, Stonecrop, and Tormentil—Lorenz translates these specimens into stylized portrayals that reflect her personal resonance with the landscape.

Vibrant, neon-tinted acrylics generate a glowing energy designed to evoke the sun, the earth, and a universal life force. Simple geometric lines and circles abstract the surrounding land and seascape, reinforcing the theme of elemental harmony and our shared connection to the natural world.
