West Side Cinema have been working with other user groups at Stromness Town Hall to fund raise for a near £25,000 project to upgrade the sound and lighting. We’re delighted to announce that we’ve been granted 80% from The Orkney Fund and OIC CECLDF, with user groups covering 20% of the total.

The project will see all stage lighting upgraded to a flexible, low energy LED lighting system with full control from the mixing desk. A wall panel will give users pre-programmed set ups, and there will be new vari-colour ambient lighting under the balconies. An audio upgrade from simple stereo to a 3.1 Dolby surround system will greatly improve the sound, while a new equipment rack and fixed speakers will reduce set up time considerably. Added to the recent external work on the stone building and windows, and the new heating system, it’s yet another boost for this important venue.

We’re planning to start work this summer, so we’ll keep you posted.

The project user groups are West Side Cinema, Stromness Drama Club, Stromness Baptist Church and Orkney Arts Society. Many thanks to supporters of the project and to our funders: The Orkney Fund, managed by Orkney Islands Council on behalf of the UK Government's Pride in Place Programme, and Orkney Islands Council Crown Estate Community Led Development Fund.

CLASSIC FILM
Sweet Smell of Success (1957) boasts a top-notch cast, sharp direction, atmospheric cinematography, and an appropriately jazzy score, making it one of the best noir crime thrillers ever made.

New York City newspaper writer J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster) holds considerable sway over public opinion with his Broadway column, but one thing that he can't control is his younger sister, Susan (Susan Harrison), who is in a relationship with aspiring jazz guitarist Steve Dallas (Marty Milner). Hunsecker strongly disapproves of the romance and recruits publicist Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis) to find a way to split the couple, no matter how ruthless the method.

The mountainous landscapes of Norway provide the monumental backdrop for this cinematic nature experience. A magnificent, existential journey with the filmmaker’s parents as its human yardstick, and with the primordial forces of the earth looming in the bedrock.

In Norway’s official selection for the Academy Awards, Director Margreth Olin has created a stunning, cinematic work about life, death, nature and about simply being present in the world. With her native Norway’s dizzyingly beautiful mountain landscapes as its monumental backdrop, Olin embarks on an existential journey with her own ageing parents as the human yardstick out in the vast expanses. Here, their family has always lived side by side with nature. Even when the earth’s primordial forces have shown their most merciless side. Her parents’ love and lifelong loyalty bear quiet witness to how surroundings and inner space resonate with each other. But not even the most rock-solid mountain is unchanging – and certainly not in times like ours. The level of detail in Olin’s lyrical and visionary poem to her homeland is almost beyond anything seen on the big screen. And that is most definitely where ‘Songs of Earth’ should be experienced.

For 14 years we've been supporting short film by theming a short with the feature film. We feel it’s so important to get these films seen on the big screen, and we really appreciate the filmmakers allowing us to screen their films as it adds a really popular dimension to our programme.

Sometimes we show a night of short films. Last night’s documentary compilation ‘The Observers’ went down a treat, scoring a very high 4.7 out of 5 on our ping-pongometer. https://wscinema.wordpress.com/ping-pongometer/

A huge big thanks to all the filmmakers that screened with us:
