The Pier Arts Centre in Stromness, Orkney was established in 1979 to provide a home for an important collection of British fine art donated by the author, peace activist and philanthropist Margaret Gardiner (1904 – 2005). The permanent Collection includes works by major 20th Century artists Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Alfred Wallis, amongst others, as well as contemporary art by Sean Scull

y, Eva Rothschild and Olafur Eliasson. The Collection also includes local artists including Sylvia Wishart and Stanley Cursiter. Although small, it is regarded as one of the finest collections of the period in the UK. A Recognised Collection of National Significance to Scotland, key works are regularly loaned to prominent exhibitions around the world. The Pier Arts Centre is also a partner of Tate, and exchanges programmes, ideas and skills with the Plus Tate network of visual arts organisations across the UK. The Centre also curates a year round programme of changing exhibitions and events for the education and enjoyment of the general public. Housed in a complex of buildings with a rich history, the Centre re-opened in July 2007 following a major redevelopment. This included creating a stunning award-winning new building on one of the piers which characterise the historic town of Stromness. The Pier Arts Centre acts as a focal point for the local artistic community. It has a valuable library and archive which is accessible to the public, and runs a programme of education and outreach activities for groups of all ages. The Pier Arts Centre is a Scottish Registered Charity No SC014815

OPEN TODAY Erin McQuarrie - The Scale of Things
19 June-26 September

This body of work by Erin McQuarrie takes its title from Margaret Tait’s (1918-1999) poem The Scale of Things, reflecting a shared attention to the natural world. Rooted in Orkney’s landscape and heritage, it invites close observation and quiet reflection.

Erin spent a month at Linkshouse, Birsay in 2025 as part of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) Residencies for Scotland programme supported by the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust and the RSA W. Gordon Smith & Jay Gordonsmith Trust. This exhibition is part of RSA200: Celebrating Together commemorating the bicentenary of RSA.

Join artist Louise Barrington at the Pier Arts Centre from 2pm tomorrow, Saturday 13th June, for a last chance to see Tracing the Natural World and to learn more about the project.
Tracing the Natural World aims to connect Orkney and Vietnam through film, sound, and sensory perception, exploring how place is experienced through everyday life.

Alongside the films, participants created postcards reflecting their own experience of place. These responses ranged from sunrises and local symbols to moments of movement and play, offering personal reflections on what defines home, memory, and connection. The postcards became a way of considering both differences and shared experience between the two countries.

Tracing the Natural World is supported by the British Council’s Connections Through Culture programme

Opening today:
Roots
A dialogue between Ukrainian and Scottish mythology
12-20 June 2026
This exhibition didn’t begin at a gallery or a workshop; it began when Ukrainians were forced to flee the war in their country and found sanctuary in Orkney. While finding their footing in these islands rich in myths, they couldn’t help but notice the similarities between Scottish and Ukrainian folklore.
Over the past few months, the artists dived back into the stories from their childhood while also exploring the myths and folklore of their new home. Though different on the surface, Ukrainian and Scottish mythologies have quite a lot in common
