The Atkinson Gallery

The Atkinson Gallery Public Gallery in Street, Somerset, based on the grounds of Millfield School.

Established in 1992, the Atkinson Gallery is nationally recognised and holds major contemporary art exhibitions which are open to the general public. The Atkinson Gallery aims to support young, aspiring artists and bring high calibre, international art to the South West region. Millfield’s stimulating arts landscape is also enhanced by a unique sculpture collection within our extensive parkland th

Stewart Geddes is a painter, former President of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA), former Head of Painting at Cardiff School of Art and Design (Cardiff Metropolitan University), and an Honorary Academician of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA), Edinburgh.

In 2018–19, he curated Albert Irvin and Abstract Expressionism at the RWA in collaboration with Tate, presenting a major exploration of abstract painting and its influences.

More recently, in 2022–23, Geddes collaborated with Philip Selway of Radiohead, creating visual works for Selway’s solo album Strange Dance and the accompanying release Live at Evolution Studios.

His career spans painting, teaching, curating, and interdisciplinary collaboration, reflecting a sustained engagement with contemporary abstraction and visual culture.

We are very much looking forward to including Stewart's painting SENEGUND in our September open exhibition.

Introducing artist Grace Green, who's work, Molecular Memory 2, will be included in our upcoming open exhibition.

Grace is a Somerset-based artist working across painting, monoprinting, installation, and participatory practice. Her work explores relationships between land, food, and community through ideas of cultivation, commoning, and care.

Green graduated with Distinction from the MA Fine Art (Painting) programme at Bath Spa University in 2025, has sold work through Liberty London, and currently exhibits in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2026.

Curated by the Atkinson Gallery team, this open exhibition invites viewers to explore the theme of Conceal / Reveal in unexpected and thought-provoking ways. Featuring a diverse range of sculpture, textiles, and paintings by both international and local artists, the exhibition examines the relationship between what is hidden and what is brought into view.

Tamsin Hyde graduated with a Fine Art degree from the University of Gloucestershire in 2014.
Working from her studio in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Tamsin draws inspiration from the dramatic beauty of the Cotswold hills and valleys. Her expressive abstract paintings are rooted in the landscape, exploring both the external environment and her personal, emotional response to it.

Tamsin's painting, Quiet Bloom is inspired by the gentle unfurling of flowers in spring and will be included in our upcoming open exhibition; Conceal/Reveal.

Introducing Gemma Girvan, the third member of our guest selection panel. Gemma is the gallery Manager and Curator at The Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Devon, where she hosts contemporary art and craft exhibitions with a focus on themes such as climate emergency and growing youth engagement.
We are very much looking forward to Gemma joining us on the 22nd June to help select the finalists for our open call Conceal/Reveal exhibition.

We’re delighted to announce that we’ll be joined by three guest panellists on 22 June to help select the artworks for our Open Call Exhibition this September.

One of our guest panellists is Joby Carter, one of the world’s leading experts in signwriting, fancy lettering and fairground art. Joby teaches traditional signwriting and other heritage crafts, including fairground art and coach lining, from his workshop in Street.

We’re looking forward to working with Joby and welcoming the creativity, expertise and playful energy he will bring to the selection process.

SUBMISSIONS ARE STILL OPEN!

Each entrant can submit up to three works.

Submitting a work does not guarantee selection.

Each submission costs £10 (£5 for students and under 25s). This is non-refundable and is put towards prizes: Panel’s Choice and Audience Choice.

Each submission must be accompanied by a completed application form and a digital image of the piece.

The pieces included in the exhibition will be chosen by a selection panel.

All pieces on paper (prints, photographs, drawings, some paintings) must be professionally framed before delivery; pieces on canvas must be stretched so that mirror plates can be attached.

Selection will l take place by Thursday 25 June.

Selected pieces should be delivered to the Atkinson Gallery on a day specified.

Artists are responsible for the delivery and collection of their own work.

Work can be for sale.

We’re inviting artists to submit work for our upcoming exhibition: CONCEAL / REVEAL

What do we hide?
What do we choose to show?
What exists beneath the surface?

This exhibition explores duality, secrecy, vulnerability, transformation, illusion, identity, and the tension between what is seen and unseen.

All mediums welcome.

Submit your work and be part of a collective exploration of hidden narratives and unveiled truths.
