Last week we marked the 80th anniversary of the birth of Buzz Goodbody with a day of talks and panel discussions reflecting upon her extraordinary life and legacy.

A radical theatre maker, the RSC's first female director and visionary director of The Other Place, Buzz Goodbody was a trailblazer. She directed multiple Shakespeare productions at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, including a feminist, modern-dress production of As You Like It in 1973 with David Suchet as Orlando and Eileen Atkins as Rosalind.

Buzz also directed radical new works and created a manifesto that led to a permanent theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon dedicated to new work and attracting non-traditional audiences, now known as The Other Place. Her 1975 production of Hamlet in that space made theatre history.

As part of our 79th annual Summer School, the panel dedicated to Buzz's life and legacy brought together author and journalist John Goodbody, brother to Buzz Goodbody, actor Louise Jameson, Honorary Associate Director Ron Daniels, Director and Associate Artist Elizabeth Freestone and Professor Abigail Rokison-Woodall.

Over 50 years on, Buzz's ethos, passion and commitment to democratising Shakespeare endures today in the work we do โค๏ธ

Turning the Royal Shakespeare Theatre into Westeros was a huge task ๐Ÿ’ช
