A drama festival organiser has said that locals were left feeling “sore” after the event failed to receive a council grant for its 40th anniversary.

The event, which was founded by Aodh McCay in 1986, was due to mark its milestone four decades in March of this year.

A Strabane Cllr has received support for a proposal that will ensure funding for the Strabane Drama Festival in 2027. We were delighted to have joined Patricia, Eilis and their wonderful team for the opening of the ADCI All-Ireland confined finals in Carrickmore. As was commented in the speeches it was amazing to see cars from every county of Ireland in Tyrone for this prestigious event. Amateur drama in Ireland is second only to the GAA in terms of volunteer participation and the sense of community at The Patrician Theatre was truly special. 🤩

It is with deep regret that we announce the 40th Anniversary Strabane Drama Festival 2026, scheduled for this March at The Alley Theatre, will not go ahead due to the theatre’s sudden closure, which is expected to continue until later next year.
We are deeply grateful for the messages of support and kindness shown to us over the past week, and we know this news will come as a disappointment to many.
