RED SPOTTED SEVERUMS

An aquarium-bred colour form of the Green severum, this fish has no natural habitat but their wild ancestors favour habitats which feature slow water movement and shelter in the form of waterlogged wood and debris.Outside of spawning, 'Sevs' are placid for their size and can be kept with a range of tankmates that are too large to swallow whole. As well as other peaceful cichlids, this can include large, deep-bodied tetras, barbs and rainbows. In a large enough aquarium, they will thrive as a group and can be thought of as enormous Angelfish, with similar social dynamics

GOLD SAUM GREEN TERROR

The Gold Saum is native to the coastal streams of northern Peru and northwards to western Ecuador, as far as the Esmeraldas River. Relatives from further north of the Esmeraldas River are thought to represent Andinoacara stalsbergi (once believed to be synonymous with A. rivulatus) the real Green Terror - despite every commercial breeder using this common name for rivulatus. The aquarium should be spacious, with a soft sand substrate and plenty of hiding places/visual barriers created using driftwood, rocky caves, and robust planting such as Java Fern or Anubias sp.

A new proposal being discussed in the UK could significantly change the future of fishkeeping.

This proposal centres on a ‘positive list’ system, in which only a limited number of approved species would be allowed to be kept, sold, or traded. While the intention is to improve animal welfare, there are growing concerns within the industry about the potential unintended consequences.

Industry experts, including the Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA), warn that this approach could:

• Restrict fishkeeping to a very small number of species
• Exclude many commonly kept fish simply due to a lack of available data, rather than any proven risk
• Create more welfare issues, rather than solving them

At present, there is no clear evidence that a positive list system would improve animal welfare outcomes.

This is an important moment for fishkeepers, hobbyists, and businesses to have their voices heard.
