A little story about how I ended up doing what I do. ❤️
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll probably know I didn’t start out painting the way I do now. It’s taken ten years of learning, experimenting, changing direction and, at times, doubting myself.
Being an artist isn’t always the easiest path. Selling paintings is hard work, and I still have another job alongside my art business. But creating, sharing my work and helping others discover their own creativity through my workshops makes it all worthwhile.
A little bit of honesty…
At my exhibition in March, I didn’t sell a single new painting over £50.
I’m not sharing that because I want sympathy. I’m sharing it because social media can make it look as though artists are constantly selling work, growing their businesses and getting everything right. The reality is often very different.
It was disappointing. I’d poured months of time, energy and emotion into that collection, and it definitely knocked my confidence for a while.
But I’ve realised that one exhibition doesn’t define me as an artist. It doesn’t mean the work wasn’t good, and it certainly doesn’t mean I should stop.
So I’m taking what I’ve learned, making a few changes and carrying on. Because that’s what artists do. We keep showing up, we keep making, and we keep believing in the next painting.
If you’re on your own creative journey, or chasing something that matters to you, don’t let one setback convince you to give up. Sometimes the next chapter begins just after the disappointment.
