Discover Sumi‑e: Intro to Japanese Ink Wash Painting with Jasmine Lau.

Discover the elegant world of Sumi-e, the traditional Japanese art of ink wash painting. This workshop offers a tranquil space to explore a practice rooted in mindfulness, where the goal is not just to depict a subject such as Lotus flowers but to capture its essential spirit through fluid, expressive brushstrokes.

All materials are included in the workshop, so we’ll have the bamboo brushes ready for you.
Here is a short introduction to the workshop for your reference.
Under the guidance of sumi-e artist Jasmine Lau, you will master the foundational techniques of this timeless art form. During the session, you will:
Learn the Basics: Gain an introduction to the history and tools of Sumi-e.
Master the Brush: Practice essential ink painting techniques and tonal graduation to create depth.
Understand Composition: Discover how to balance space and form on the page.
Create Your Masterpiece: Apply your new skills to paint a delicate camellia, taking home a finished work of art.
In the session, we will use Gasen paper (specialist rice paper from Japan), artist-grade Japanese liquid ink, and bamboo brushes to ensure the most authentic experience.

Date: Tuesday 8th September 2026.

Time: Arrive 6.45 pm for a 7.00 pm start.
Event finishes approx. 9.15 pm.

Why not try Intaglio Printmaking?

What to expect: Alan will be leading a group of artists on dry point printmaking which is an intaglio technique in which an image is incised onto a plate with a sharp metal needle such as an etching tool. The lines produced by the etching tool form burr's which are thrown up edges of the incised line. The burr will hold the ink creating a soft print. Each artist will be given a 7 x 5 inch plastic Perspex plate to work on.
The artist would then place a drawing they have prepared underneath the plate and create an impression in the Perspex using an etching tool. Each artist would have the opportunity to create a couple of prints and then print a final print on high quality printing paper.

About the artist: Alan is an professional artist/printmaker/tutor working out of Prospect Studios in Waterfoot, Lancashire. Alan works predominantly in print, but has worked with a variety of other media including drawing, metal and digital images. Alan's work is imbued with his own unique sense of humour, offering a personal view on the contemporary world.
