The Lytton Players are the leading Amateur Dramatic and Musical Society in Stevenage since 1948.

We have four groups who perform during the year :
Drama - meet on Tuesdays and Fridays
Music - meet on Mondays and Wednesdays
Lights Up!- rehearse from early November and perform mid January
Youth - meet on Sundays (with a group of the more experienced on Thursday)

✨ Here it is! The finished result! Our newly repaired roof, looking fantastic and ready to keep us dry for many years to come! 🏠🎭

🎭 SLP is recruiting a Cleaner! 🎭
The Stevenage Lytton Players, based at our theatre on Vardon Road, Stevenage, are seeking a reliable and conscientious Cleaner to help keep our premises in excellent condition for our members, audiences, and visiting companies.

About the Role
This is a self employed position responsible for maintaining cleanliness across our rehearsal rooms, auditorium, backstage areas, and communal spaces. You will also be responsible for opening and securing the building, including managing the alarm system.

Hours
• 3 hours, one day per week (preferably Wednesday)
• 5 hours during show weeks, split as:
o 1 hour each on Thursday, Friday, Saturday
o 2 hours on Sunday
• We typically have 6–8 show weeks per year

Pay
• £13.00 per hour (aged 21+)
• £11.00 per hour (ages 18–20) Payment is made monthly upon receipt of your invoice.

Requirements
• You must be 18 or over
• Able to work during the day or late afternoon (unless otherwise agreed)
• Comfortable opening/closing the building and managing the alarm system
• Reliable, trustworthy, and able to work independently
• Responsible for your own Tax and National Insurance as a self employed worker

Having already swept aside Cats, comfortably beaten Cabaret and now dispatched Sweeney Todd, Les Mis has looked every inch the tournament favourite.

France may have missed out on lifting the FIFA World Cup... but they have every chance of bringing home the Musicals World Cup! 🇫🇷🏆

💃 West Side Story
Jerome Robbins insisted the actors playing the Jets and Sharks stayed apart during rehearsals to build genuine rivalry, with each group encouraged to think of themselves as a real gang. Also, the dance at the gym took over a month to film for the 1961 movie, with every movement meticulously choreographed by Jerome Robbins to make the rival gangs tell the story through dance as much as dialogue.

🇫🇷 Les Misérables
The famous "One Day More" features multiple characters singing completely different melodies at the same time. It's one of the most complex and celebrated ensemble numbers ever written for the musical stage.

🏆🎭 OUR FIRST FINALIST HAS BEEN DECIDED! 🎭🏆

The first semi-final is over...

💃 West Side Story easily saw off Chicago to book its place in the Musicals World Cup Final!

Chicago gave it the old razzle dazzle, but it wasn't enough to stop Bernstein and Sondheim's masterpiece from reaching the biggest stage of them all.

Now there's just one place left in the final...

🔪 Sweeney Todd vs 🇫🇷 Les Misérables

One is Stephen Sondheim's dark, thrilling tale of revenge. The other is the epic story of hope, sacrifice and redemption that has looked almost unstoppable throughout this tournament.

Les Mis has swept aside both Cats and Cabaret with ease, but Sweeney Todd has been quietly sharpening its razor all tournament long. Is this where the favourites finally meet their match?

🔪 Sweeney Todd
Sondheim almost didn't write the show. He initially thought a musical about a murderous barber sounded ridiculous, but after reading Christopher Bond's stage adaptation, he realised it could be told as a tragic story rather than just a horror tale.

🇫🇷 Les Misérables
When Les Misérables first opened in London's West End in 1985, many critics gave it poor reviews. Audiences disagreed, and nearly four decades later, it's one of the longest-running musicals in the world.

The final quarter-final is complete...

🇫🇷 Les Misérables absolutely steamrolled 🎩 Cabaret to book its place in the last four. It wasn't just a win, it was a revolution.

After cruising past Cats and now comfortably dispatching Cabaret, Les Mis is looking every bit like the team to beat.

The question is... can anyone stop them? 👀

But before we find out, it's time for our first semi-final...

🎷 Chicago vs 💃 West Side Story

Only one can earn a place in the Musicals World Cup Final.

🎭 Before you vote, here's some trivia...

🎷 Chicago
Although it's now one of Broadway's biggest success stories, the original 1975 production lost the Tony Award for Best Musical to A Chorus Line. It took the 1996 revival to turn Chicago into the global phenomenon it is today.

💃 West Side Story
West Side Story was nearly East Side Story. Leonard Bernstein originally planned the musical to be about conflict between a Jewish family and a Catholic family on New York's Lower East Side. The concept was later reworked into the rivalry between the Jets and Sharks, creating the classic we know today.

One is an intimate, provocative masterpiece set in 1930s Berlin. The other is an epic tale of revolution, redemption, and one of the most beloved musicals ever written.

Only one can join Chicago, West Side Story and Sweeney Todd in the semi-finals.

🎩 Cabaret
The musical is based on the real-life experiences of British writer Christopher Isherwood, who lived in Berlin during the final years of the Weimar Republic. Many of the characters and events were inspired by people he actually knew before the rise of the N**i regime.

🇫🇷 Les Misérables
The famous turntable stage wasn't just a visual gimmick, it revolutionised scene changes in modern musical theatre. It allowed the action to flow continuously, with moments like Javert's su***de and the Paris barricades becoming some of the most memorable staging in Broadway and West End history.

Another semi-finalist has been decided...

💃 West Side Story danced its way into the last four with a comfortable victory over 🦁 The Lion King.

The Sharks and the Jets march on, while Simba and friends have taken their final bow.

Now it's time for Quarter-Final 3...

🎶 The Sound of Music vs 🔪 Sweeney Todd

One is a heartwarming Rodgers & Hammerstein classic filled with songs generations have grown up with. The other is Stephen Sondheim's gripping tale of revenge, widely regarded as one of the greatest scores ever written. Only one can join Chicago and West Side Story in the semi-finals.

🎭 Before you vote, here's some trivia...

🎶 The Sound of Music
The famous "Do-Re-Mi" sequence was filmed at several locations around Salzburg. Today, thousands of fans visit the city every year specifically to take Sound of Music tours and recreate scenes from the film.

🔪 Sweeney Todd
Listen closely and you'll hear one of music's most famous melodies woven throughout the score: the Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath"), a medieval chant traditionally associated with death and doom. Composers from Mozart to Berlioz to John Williams have referenced it, and Sondheim uses it subtly throughout Sweeney Todd to foreshadow the darkness and inevitable fate awaiting many of the characters.
