Works by Gareth Schweitzer .schweitzer

London-based artist and educator Gareth Schweitzer presents a vibrant and exploratory exhibition rooted in collage, collaboration, and intuitive creativity. Drawing from his background in painting, art history, and literature, Schweitzer delves into what Audre Lorde called the Erotic—not as salacious, but as a source of wisdom, joy, and self-awareness. The show emphasizes a non-patriarchal, process-driven approach, guided by instinct and attraction rather than preordained rules.

The exhibition comprises three key sections. First, a cross-continental collaboration with New Zealand artist Steve Lovett explores shared q***r sensibilities and rejuvenates Schweitzer’s use of long-collected paper fragments and sensual imagery. Second, works derived from Schweitzer’s teaching practice incorporate techniques like fumage, collage weaving, and shredded compositions—many inspired by feminist and experimental art histories. Third, Schweitzer showcases the evolution of his personal practice, including tactile paper collages and digital works made during daily train commutes, later transformed through analogue processes.

Embracing automatic methods reminiscent of early 20th-century Spiritualist artists, Schweitzer allows chance and unconscious gestures to lead, resulting in layered, surprising, and intimate compositions. These works celebrate the strange, the beautiful, and the erotic, inviting viewers to experience pleasure through visual discovery and intuitive engagement.
