Exhibitor Profile - Michael Kirby 🎨

Michael Kirby is a local artist whose work explores portraiture, landscape and the human figure, capturing both the character of people and the atmosphere of the places around him.

Born in Liverpool in 1956, Michael studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Wigan School of Art and Design before moving to London, where he spent 25 years working as a freelance illustrator within the capital’s advertising industry. Returning to Liverpool in 2002, he turned his focus towards developing his own painting practice.

Michael’s work is influenced by artists including John Singer Sargent and Lucien Freud, with his interests spanning both urban and rural landscapes alongside figurative and portrait painting. His work often combines strong observational skills with an appreciation for atmosphere, character and the everyday environment.

His paintings have been exhibited extensively throughout Merseyside and beyond. Michael has received several accolades throughout his career, including Second Prize at the West Lancashire Open Exhibition in 2014 and commendations in earlier editions.

In 2015, Michael appeared on Sky Arts’ *Landscape Artist of the Year*, competing at Lyme Park in Cheshire and reaching the final three artists in his heat.

A member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Michael continues to develop his painting from his Liverpool base, creating work inspired by people, places and the changing character of the landscape. His paintings are held in private collections throughout the UK, and he is also available for commissions.

Michael’s work is a celebration of observation and atmosphere, bringing together his experience as an illustrator with his passion for painting and his strong connection to the people and places of the North West and many of his pieces are available in Gallery More.

✨ Meet the Artist: Brian Lewis ✨

For Brian, art has been a constant throughout a remarkable career spanning more than six decades.
After studying at Southport Art School in the late 1950s, he went on to study Graphics and Lithography at Luton Art College.

Brian has enjoyed a long career in art education, becoming a senior art teacher in Wigan before retiring in 1990. Following his retirement he established a studio and workshop where he could devote more time to his own practice.

His work reflects a lifelong curiosity about shape, form and the character of his chosen materials, whether working in paint or sculpture. There is a strong sense of exploration in his practice, with each piece developing from an initial idea through drawing and experimentation.

Drawing plays an important role in his creative process. His work explores the human figure, natural forms and the world around him, with ideas developing through observation, experimentation and the possibilities offered by the materials themselves.

A longstanding and much-loved figure in Southport’s art community, Brian is President of the Southport Palette Club, continuing a lifelong involvement with the town’s artistic heritage.

Discover Brian’s work alongside a fantastic collection of contemporary artists at Gallery More.

✨ Meet the Artist – Bernie Yates ✨

Liverpool based woodturner Bernie Yates creates beautifully handcrafted pieces that celebrate the natural beauty of timber. An active member of the Merseyside Woodturners Association, Bernie works from both Calderstones Boathouse and his home workshop, where he dedicates his time to producing unique, high-quality creations.

On display at Gallery More are many pieces created by Bernie. Crafted from locally sourced woods including maple, sycamore and beech, each bowl is individually turned and hand-painted with acrylic to enhance the beauty of the natural wood. Finished with three coats of lacquer and carefully polished, every piece has a durable, luxurious finish.

As every bowl is handcrafted, no two are ever the same – making each one a truly one-of-a-kind work of art.

Come and see Bernie's stunning collection in person and discover the craftsmanship behind every piece.

✨ Meet our Maker: Kate Firth Ceramicist ✨

Kate is a ceramic artist whose work is guided by instinct and emotion, with each piece reflecting how she feels on the day it is made. She is drawn to creating elegant bowls and vases, characterised by expressive forms and a calming palette of greens, blues and soft pinks. Recently, she has been exploring brush-on glazes, embracing their unpredictable nature and the unique finishes they produce.

Creativity runs strongly through Kate’s family. Her father was a watercolour artist, her aunt a sculptor based in Norwich, and her grandfather an architect. While Kate has found her own voice through clay rather than on paper, her artistic heritage is unmistakable.

Kate has exhibited at the Atkinson Open and The Art House, and we are proud that Gallery More is one of the few places where her work can be found. We hold a wide selection of her ceramics, making Southport one of the only places to purchase her pieces.

Pop into Gallery More to discover Kate’s beautiful handmade ceramics - you may just find the perfect piece to take home 💚💙🩷

🐶Artist Spotlight - Chris Birks

Chris Birks has maintained an artistic practice grounded in a strong sense of vocation. Based in Halsall, near Ormskirk in Lancashire, Chris has specialised in pet portraiture and wildlife art since 2017, drawing inspiration from a love of nature and animals.

Working primarily in oils, more recently extending his practice to include watercolour, pastel, and pen and ink. His work is characterised by a high level of detail and a sensitive attention to the character and presence of his subjects. Spanning wildlife, equine studies and portraiture, his paintings balance technical precision with a nuanced sense of observation.

Rooted in the landscapes of the Lancashire countryside, Birks’ work reflects an ongoing engagement with rural life and the natural environment. His paintings convey a quiet intimacy, offering carefully observed studies that emphasise atmosphere, form and a strong sense of place.

Artist Spotlight 🖌️ Sue Stevens............
“I never start with a specific image in mind… so what do I do? I paint.”

For Liverpool-born artist Sue Stevens, painting is an act of trust. Rather than beginning with a fixed plan, she embraces the unknown, allowing each piece to develop organically through colour, texture and instinct.

Based in North West England, Sue’s atmospheric abstract works often touch on memory, seascapes and a sense of isolation, while leaving space for the viewer to find their own story within them.

A practising art psychotherapist as well as an artist, Sue brings honesty, courage and emotional depth to her work, creating paintings that speak beyond words.

We’re proud to showcase Sue’s work at Gallery More and invite you to discover the stories hidden within her paintings.

Meet the wonderful Sandie Henderson🐎

Originally from Cumbria, she draws inspiration from the dramatic beauty of its coastline, fells, and mountains, landscapes that shaped her deep connection to the natural world.

Working across sculpture, drawing, and printmaking, Sandie captures the raw power, movement, and spirit of the horse. Her pieces reflect not just form, but an elemental energy, connecting each horse to the wildness of its environment.

With a background as a British Horse Society Riding Instructor, her work is grounded in real experience. Careful study of equine anatomy and behaviour plays a key role in her creative process.

While contemporary in style, Sandie’s work is influenced by ancient traditions, including Greek, Etruscan, and Tang Dynasty art. Inspirations also include George Stubbs, Marino Marini, and Elizabeth Frink.

Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, and features in both public and private collections.
