Next Friday at The Engine Room, we're staging something we've been working on for a while — and we wanted to make sure you knew about it before the last tickets go.

BEST PRACTICE is a new comedy for anyone who has ever tried to make something happen in a town like this. Policy makers, civic planners, educators, artists, social entrepreneurs, community volunteers — anyone who's filled in a funding form, sat through a meeting that went nowhere, or kept going anyway. It's inspired by real events in Southport, performed by Lecoq-trained clown Seamus Lavan with a company of local young people, and made with dramaturgy by Eleanor Lybeck (who many will remember as Albert the Clown in the Big Top Festival).

It is, more or less, our own story. Told with rather more honesty than dignity.
When the show ends, Liverpool dream-pop act Novelty Island play a live set — drinks will be served.

Welcome to the first Engine Room R***e.

Part live concert, part variety show, part Saturday night social gathering, The Engine Room R***e brings together music, comedy, dancing and unexpected delights in the historic surroundings of Wayfarers Arcade.

The Engine Room's house Soul Band, The Kidney Context leads the evening, joined by a changing cast of singers, musicians, comedians, storytellers, DJs and special guests.

Inspired by the great r***e traditions of Memphis, New Orleans, the British music hall and the golden age of variety entertainment, the evening begins with live music and banter before gradually building towards rhythm, laughter and dancing.

Expect soul, rhythm & blues, jazz, folk, curious performances, breaking the fourth wall, and more than the occasional surprise.

No two R***es will be exactly alike.

Whether you're looking for a concert, a social evening, a dance floor, or simply an excuse to spend time with interesting people, The Engine Room R***e has it all.

Join us for an evening of hot jazz, western swing, rockabilly and vintage rhythm & blues as Rip Roaring Success bring their acclaimed live show to The Engine Room.

Opening the evening will be local acoustic folk duo Liam & Claire before Rip Roaring Success take the stage from around 7.30pm.

Featuring guitar, fiddle and double bass, the trio combine dazzling musicianship, infectious rhythms and a healthy dose of humour to create one of the most entertaining live roots shows on the circuit.

FREE AFTER-SHOW: NOVELTY ISLAND LIVE AT THE ENGINE ROOM

On Friday 19 June, after BEST PRACTICE, we’ll be keeping the evening going with a free live set from Novelty Island.

Led by Liverpool-based songwriter and producer Tom McConnell, Novelty Island has been described as “Paul McCartney having an argument with Bernard Black” — lo-fi, melancholy, melodic and slightly strange in all the right ways.

Their latest album Jigsaw Causeway was accompanied by Tom’s debut art exhibition of large-scale papier-mâché sculptures from the album artwork. Novelty Island have received support from Mojo, Shindig, BBC 6 Music, BBC Introducing and Absolute Radio, toured across the UK, and performed at Glastonbury.

The Engine Room is entering a new chapter.

Supported by Arts Council England, we've launched a new programme of music, performance and community events from Wayfarers Arcade.

Alongside the relaunch we've also launched a new website developed with designer Liam Jackson, bringing together events, news and opportunities to get involved.

On Friday 19 June we're presenting BEST PRACTICE, a new comedy inspired by the realities of trying to make something happen in an ordinary town.
