Tom Johnson, whose revival and widely critically acclaimed adaptation of Verbal Diary which toured festivals and theatres across the UK last year, is heading to the The Rik Mayall Comedy Festival on Sunday 31st May with his and Chris Roberts’ new Edinburgh Fringe show Armageddon Outta Here.
Expect apocalyptic sketch comedy, ge***al obliteration and a very special finale in honour of the late, great Rik Mayall.

An asteroid is hurtling toward Earth. Humanity’s last hope is two astronauts, and absolutely nothing is simple. Ego, denial, faith, panic, and petty squabbles ripple through a world teetering on the edge, where the end is imminent and the absurdity never stops. Dark, loud, childish, and gloriously anarchic, Armageddon Outta Here is the apocalypse we deserve.

Written by and starring Tom Johnson (Verbal Diary, Chortle’s Top 10 recommended theatre show for comedy fans, EdFringe 2024) and Chris Roberts, this new sketch-comedy hour grew from their Short & Sweet award-winning ten-minute piece Sacrifice, expanding into a full collection of surreal, end-of-the-world sketches.

In the end, we all show our true colours. Either on the floor or in our pants.

“Johnson is a comedic tour de force.” – VOICE UK

“A highlight of The Rik Mayall Comedy Festival.” – SLAPMAG

“Johnson shines both as a performer and in his great comedy writing.” – MyViewFromTheStalls

"A fiercely original voice" - TheatreToSee

“I never thought for one moment I’d meet someone as stupid as me.” – John Otway, Rock n Roll's Greatest Failure

Nice way to start off 2026, being cited as one of TheatreToSeeLondon’s Top 10 shows of the year. What a daft wee show. Till the next time some idiot decides to revive and rewrite it… wiser, poorer and still unconvinced.

Lovely review of the CryerArts Centre gig from MyViewFromTheStalls

“The humour kept appearing in different ways, with a brilliant mixture of physical comedy, unexpectedly bonkers outfit changes and great comedy writing…

The comedy was constant, and this is the sort of show you watch with a permanent smile on your face, as the gags keep coming. The variety in the comedy kept it fresh throughout, and the performances from the cast and musicians were faultless.”

When touring, John Otway often likes to make his band squirm by springing long forgotten songs on them mid-set, and watches chaos unfold as they hurriedly try to remember it. Last week, Tom Johnson decided to turn the tables.

With a four-piece string section, Tom and the band secretly rehearsed a song Otway has never performed live. And it's one of his most beautiful. Think we got away with it.

Here’s The Conductor’s Waltz.

Featuring:
Special Guest, Richard Holgarth – Keys (balanced on an ironing board)

Nick Pynn & Charlie Skelton – Fiddles

Hannah Whitbourn – Cello

Scutty Lee & Tom Johnson – Guitars

A big thanks to Andy McCulloch from EvenButterfliesMakeASound for his kind words in this written piece about the show.

“Verbal Diary is a gloriously inventive, warm-hearted, bitter-sweet, and laugh-out loud show. It really is a must-see. Trouble is, it will end for good soon. And the lucky denizens of the Cryer Arts in Carshalton will be those fortunate to bear witness as the curtains come down for the last time.”

John Otway gifted his Verbal Diary play to Tom Johnson who updated it superbly. However, the play will soon be performed for the final time.
