This was another gem from during one of our CREATIVE SHIFT live calls last year 💫

She spoke about "shoulding" being a warning sign that an external voice has entered the room. A voice that creates pressure, a voice that tells us there is a right way, a correct timeline, or a standard we're supposed to be meeting...

Creativity rarely works like that - most of us are exploring our way forward with each little step we take. We're trying things, learning things and changing things. Following our ideas to see where they lead - and that means there will always be moments where we don't quite know what we're doing.

Perhaps that's not a problem to solve - perhaps that's simply part of the process ✨

This week I'd like to share a couple of quotes from KC, aka

KC is one of the mentors inside CREATIVE SHIFT. She joins us for every live call and is present in the community - always incredibly generous in sharing her experience, encouragement and perspectives with our members.

Alongside her role as a mentor, KC is a full-time artist and founder of 💫 Before dedicating herself fully to her art practice, she worked as a psychotherapist for more than 25 years.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have KC as part of the CREATIVE SHIFT team. She brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and wisdom to our conversations, whilst remaining endlessly curious about her own creative development. Her insights are thoughtful, generous, grounded and always deeply valued by our members.

This particular conversation from last year's CREATIVE SHIFT was all about following our nudges - those ideas, impulses and creative tugs that invite us to explore something new.

During one discussion, KC shared this:

"It's taken us on a journey, but what it's doing is allowing us to experience a trust in ourselves. Where we feel more competent and more confident. And that's worth bucketloads! That's as much as the idea itself, if we can rely on ourselves to follow through."

I thought that was such a valuable reminder ✨

Every time we follow an idea, experiment with a new approach, or take a step into uncertainty, we're not just learning about our work - we're learning that we can trust ourselves.

And sometimes that trust is every bit as valuable as wherever the idea eventually leads.

Another beautiful reflection from one of members on our live CREATIVE SHIFT calls last year.

I think many of us can relate to this!

Life moves quickly - we move quickly, and sometimes in the process, we miss things.

Noticing isn't about adding another task to our to-do list. It's about becoming a little more aware of what's already around us, what's happening within us, and what might be quietly trying to get our attention. Sometimes the most valuable information isn't hidden, it's simply waiting for us to slow down enough to see it.

I love it because it captures something that always happens during this particular week of the course.

Nothing had changed - the patterns had always been there - what changed was the participant's awareness.

As artists, we're constantly surrounded by information, details, colours, textures, shapes and experiences. It isn't always about finding something new, sometimes it's about noticing what's been there all along.

One of last year's CREATIVE SHIFT participants, Elli Woodsford, reflected that she:
"needed to step out of my comfort zone."

Do you recognise that feeling?
I think we want our work to evolve, deepen and become more personal, but growth rarely comes from repeating exactly what we've always done - but it's also scary to try a different way of doing things...

Although, sometimes it begins with something - much smaller:
A new material, a different approach, a willingness to follow an idea without knowing exactly where it will lead.

Not every experiment will transform your work and not every exploration will reveal something significant - but without creating space for those moments, it's very difficult for our work to shift and develop over time.

What might be one small thing you could try differently in your practice this week? ✨

One of my favourite moments from last year's CREATIVE SHIFT was hearing a participant say:

"I really hate the word play."

And honestly, I totally got it.

The conversations that followed were fascinating because we all bring different experiences, assumptions and associations to that word.

For me, play, exploration and experimentation are all pointing towards something similar: a willingness to step beyond what we already know and discover what happens.

Which word feels most comfortable to you? ✨

When things aren’t flowing in our practice, we often assume the problem is the work itself.

But sometimes the issue lies elsewhere, sometimes it's the way we've organised our time, or it could be about the habits we've fallen into, sometimes it's the expectations we've placed on ourselves, and sometimes it's simply that our process no longer fits the work we're trying to make 💫

Over time, we all develop ways of working, some consciously, some unconsciously… often, we fall into habits and grooves, and we just ‘do’.

Every now and then it's worth pausing to take a closer look, we're not doing anything wrong, but our practice changes, our interests evolve and our work takes on a new direction. So - I think it's worth checking whether our processes are evolving alongside it.

Questions like these sit at the heart of CREATIVE SHIFT, my 12-week programme for artists and creatives who want to develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their work and their creative practice.

How often do you think about the materials you use?

Do you use them because they're readily available?

Because you've always used them?

Because somebody introduced you to them years ago?

Or because they genuinely support the work you want to make?

There's no right or wrong answer.

It's simply interesting to notice ✨

As artists, we spend a lot of time thinking about ideas, inspiration and the work we're trying to create - but how often do we stop and think about the materials we're creating it with?

The papers, fabrics, paints, tools and surfaces we use all bring something of their own to the process. Sometimes they've been consciously chosen, sometimes they've simply become familiar - either way, they're playing a part in shaping the work.

Something to ponder today:

What are your materials bringing to your work?
