Reading Groups with Elliot Gibbons: Southend’s Twilight Worlds & Towards a Gay Communism by Mario Mieli

Join us for a series of reading groups as part of Pluto Press’ The Reading Room project. TOMA and are collaborating on these over the coming year.

From May 2023, will host three reading groups that will look at the publication Southend’s Twilight Worlds // that he edited on local q***r history and Towards a Gay Communism by Mario Mieli. Meili’s book was first published in Italian in 1977 and is considered one of the earliest books of q***r theory, although it was not seen as q***r theory during the time. Over the course of these sessions, you will collectively consider LGBTQIA+ culture and theory by drawing connections between these two books.

Elliot Gibbons is a curator and writer based in Essex.

That’s a wrap on the exhibition Southend’s Twilight Worlds! You can still visit our website to find out a different side of Southend, and can even purchase a book if you want to get really clued up! 💫🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️✨

We had 707 visitors to Southend’s Twilight Worlds. 42 people got involved with the events we curated to engage people with local q***r history and boost their mental wellbeing. The project also reached over 30,000 people through digital channels.

One visitor commented “I found it really fascinating, I am from an older generation & lived through it but it’s quite shocking how closed down we were”. Another visitor said “I can’t believe how recent some of this is, it’s not all distant past as we sometimes think of it”. We even had a person say that visiting the exhibition made their week. Whilst one more person said that upon seeing the exhibition they feel proud to say they live in Southend!

37 books have sold and counting. The book has been stocked at the following venues: , , , , , & in NYC! You can find the book in all the local libraries in Southend-on-Sea and the Essex Records Office.

Thanks to our funders and Essex Heritage Trust. But a very special thanks goes to all the artists and writers, and the countless people and organisations who have worked on or supported the project from start to finish!

A local actor supposedly named Danny Ford was subjected to a tabloid scandal during the AIDS crisis. Following a sensationalised front page story from The Sun headlined ‘Gay Santa Gets Sack’ in 1986, the Cliff pub was the venue of choice for Ford to be interviewed by the Evening Echo to explain his side of story. This being that Ford left his role as a Christmas grotto Santa, within the historic department store Keddies, due to fears he would be terrorised after another national newspaper insinuated they would falsely print he had HIV/AIDS.

In 's essay titled ‘‘Fairy Grotto Bust-up’: On Derek Jarman’s Time’, the nature of this news story is problematised through an exploration of The Sun’s headline making an appearance in a late Derek Jarman painting titled Time (1992). Derek Jarman is a key figure within British LGBTQ+ history, known for both his artwork which spans across various media, and his unrelenting commitment to LGBTQ+ activism. Through analysing the painting, Gibbons argues there is a dialogue formed between the incident in Southend and the wording Jarman painted onto the canvas, which creates a picture of the nature of time during the era of Section 28 and AIDS.

In Justin Bengry’s contribution to the publication, titled ‘Local History is Q***r History’, he considers recent research projects moving q***r history away from the capital, before analysing a questionnaire sent to Southend councillors by a local branch of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality in 1982. Bengry is convenor of the world’s first MA in Q***r History and has been involved in several key projects moving q***r history projects such as Q***r Beyond London. ‘s Most Homosexuals are Actually Incredibly Dull (2021) is a painted text based work on MDF featuring the titular phrase. The phrase refutes the notion seen within the Evening Echo article, and today, that homosexuals are different from everyone else.

You can come see ‘s work for yourself every Saturday 12-6 and Sunday 12-5! ✨💫🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈

The Agency of Visible Women present their publication A Snapshot of Southend as a Cultural Environment for Womxn (2019)
that asked women and femmes to reflect on their experiences within the art and culture sector in Southend-on-Sea. Fifty-two of the responses are compiled with graphics overlaid with text in the ‘Mrs Eaves’ typeface that was named after Sarah Eaves, just one of the many overlooked women within the history of typography.
