After Mendelssohn had stood in the ruins of Holyrood Chapel, he wrote to his parents on the evening of 31st July 1829 about his travels. Attached to his letter was a scrap of paper with what would become the opening theme of his Scottish Symphony. References to Mary Queen of Scots are found in the opening slow introduction, as well as in the Adagio 3rd movement, which has been described as a lament for her.
We will be performing Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony at Turner Sims on the 19th of March, as well as Schubert’s 8th Symphony “Unfinished” and Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture.
Tickets are now available on the Turner Sims website: https://www.turnersims.co.uk/events/su-sinfonietta-25th-anniversary-concert/
