Date for your diary... Delighted to be taking part again in Spring Fling 2026. It's Scotland's top open studio event and a great reason to take a break in Dumfries & Galloway! This year I'm on the pink route in the heart of the region. Check out all the great participating artists and makers https://www.spring-fling.co.uk/

Delighted that the collaborative work '(Shadow) Tools from a Latent Culture' made by Rachel Ashcroft (Woman of the Woods ) and me has been selected for the upcoming Visual Arts Scotland exhibition “Future Folklore” at the Maclaurin Art Gallery in Ayr next month.

Delicate porcelain apparatus with rune like symbols etched into the surface contrasts yet connects to the blackened ash forms flowing effortlessly from the instrument to the hand.

Ducks and geese a popular choice for Creetown Primary P6-7 FLOCK session - not surprising with all the lovely honkers flying around here at the moment.

I have a piece in this exhibition, opening next week at Kirkcudbright Galleries. It's going to be a varied and interesting show - come along and take a look.
'Common Ground: The Living Landscape is an exhibition that brings together artists and makers whose work speaks to our deep, evolving relationship with Scotland’s natural environment. Through objects, images, and installations, it explores how creativity can reflect, honour, celebrate and reimagine the interconnectivity of Art and Nature. '

Out west with the FLOCK project last week, visiting primary schools at Sandhead, Portpatrick and Stranraer. Great conversations, engagement and bird-making by all schools.
Clockwise from top left: A herring gull made in Stranraer, an actual herring gull in Portpatrick, some fabulous creatures made during the experimental phase of the workshop, and a particularly groovy chick.

The first two sessions of the new phase of the FLOCK project took place at Leswalt and Kirkcolm primary schools on the Rhins of Galloway. Classes full of enthusiasm made great clay birds.

This phase of the project will visit 45 schools across Dumfries and Galloway in south west Scotland, culminating in an exhibition of the birds - the FLOCK- debuting at 2026. In this phase I'm delighted to be joined in delivering sessions by Clare Dawdry and Ruth Jones, who will be visiting schools in the centre and east of the region respectively.

Read more about the project at www.weareupland.com/projects/flock

1. FLOCK birds from the first two sessions
2. Stopping for a break between workshops by Loch Ryan
3. Pale-bellied Brant geese in a field by Loch Ryan
4. Possibly the shelliest beach in the west

The moment during Spring Fling 2025 when the minibus arrived and we lost our minds... 25 people in the studio at once?

Thanks very much to everyone who visited and supported my studio over the weekend. It was a huge joy to share my work with you, and I'm grateful for all the interest and curiosity in everything I do here, from poured Parian porcelain, the collection of (Shadow) Tools from a Latent Culture with Rachel Ashcroft .of.the.woods , the schools FLOCK project with , my stoneware works, my pop-up pottery and all my prototypes and experiments.

Special unbounded thanks to for being a kickass advocate, unflagging supporter and bezzie, to and Ant for top refreshments and backstage services. Award for emotional support dog goes to Dolly.

Some of you may know that I missed the application period for Spring Fling and I’m not in it this year. After 18 consecutive years (excluding Covid) this is sad for me and for my visitors. This is just a reminder that my gallery is open whenever we are around or by appointment. This Saturday, May 24th, we will make sure we’re in for anyone wishing to visit. I won’t be demonstrating and this not part of Spring Fling, which I commend to everyone!
Feel free to pass it on!
