🍰 MEET OUR BAKER… RUSSELL! 🍰

He has a spreadsheet for that! 📊😂

Meet Steve Hayes, who is swapping his usual villainous tendencies for mixing bowls and measuring scales as Russell.

Steve has been lighting up stages around Solihull since 2012 and this is his second Stags production. His impressive musical theatre CV includes Sister Act, Aida, The Wedding Singer, Our House, My Fair Lady, Chess, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Calamity Jane and Sugar. He’s also appeared in numerous plays and pantomimes, including a scene-stealing turn as the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Off stage, Steve is a communications director, voice artist and devoted Aston Villa fan. On stage this time, he’s Russell, an aeronautical engineer who approaches baking with precision, science and, naturally, a spreadsheet. Because why simply bake a cake when you can engineer one? 🤓🧁

Rehearsals are proving that Russell’s meticulous approach is a delicious fit for Steve, although whether all that planning survives the pressure of the tent remains to be seen…

One thing is certain, this bake is going to be thoroughly calculated! 📐🍰

Excellent effort. Works well under pressure. Occasionally distracted by buns, tarts and soggy bottoms. 🤭

🍰 MEET OUR BAKER… BEN! 🍰

Some people enter the tent hoping to win. For Ben, there’s something rather more important at stake. 💙

Meet Jon Mulkeen, who is taking on the role of Ben in The Great British Bake Off Musical.

Jon is relatively new to performing, having previously appeared as Jacob Marley in Union Theatre’s A Christmas Carol and Gaston in Queensbridge’s Beauty and the Beast. He’s particularly pleased that Ben marks his first character who doesn’t meet an untimely demise! 😂

There are some lovely parallels between Jon and his character too. Like Ben, Jon is a keen baker and a single dad, making the warmth and heart of this role especially close to home. Thankfully, his biggest onstage worries this time are parenting and pastry rather than plotting and peril!

Ben’s story is one of the real heartbeats of the show. He arrives in the tent carrying rather more than his mixing bowl, and with his daughter Lily firmly in his corner, he discovers that sometimes baking can help put the pieces back together. ❤️

Jon is bringing so much warmth and humour to Ben in rehearsals already. There may be laughter, there may be cake and we’re making absolutely no promises about keeping your eyes dry… 🥹🍰

🎤 MEET OUR PRESENTERS! 🍰

The ones REALLY running the tent… or at least that’s what they’d have you believe! 😂

Meet James Gough as Jim and Nicola Sivyer as Kim, our presenting duo charged with keeping the bakers calm, the audience entertained and proceedings vaguely under control.

James is back for his third Stags show after quite literally baring all as Jerry in The Full Monty. His recent credits also include Davy in Sunshine on Leith and Adam/Felicia in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. This time there’s considerably more clothing, but judging by rehearsals, absolutely no reduction in the mischief! 🎤😂

Nicola is another familiar Stags face, having taken principal roles in Sister Act, Kipps, The Producers and The Full Monty, amongst others. She brings bags of personality, brilliant comic timing and exactly the sort of presenter energy needed when everything in the tent starts going slightly… soggy. 💗

Jim is the energy, Kim is the control. At least, that’s the theory. Rehearsals suggest the reality may be considerably more chaotic! 🤣

These two are already bouncing beautifully off each other and we cannot wait to unleash them on The Core stage.

🎂 MEET OUR JUDGES! 🍰

Two experts. Two opinions. One VERY tough decision… and probably a few nervous bakers waiting for the verdict! 👀

Stepping up to the judging table are Sue Burrows as Pam Lee and Jake Cano Collada as Phil Hollingsworth.

Sue first joined Stags for The Producers in 2019 and has since appeared in Kipps, Kinky Boots, Shrek, 9 to 5 and, most recently, as the fabulously flamboyant Vicki Nichols in The Full Monty. Having fallen in love with The Great British Bake Off Musical when she saw it in the West End, she now gets to sit on the other side of the cake and deliver the verdicts herself! 💗

Jake is a drama graduate from Aberystwyth University and joined Stags in spectacular fashion, playing the title role in Shrek in 2023, before returning as Mr Bumble in Oliver! in 2024. He freely admits his acting and vocal skills are considerably stronger than his baking skills, which is probably why we’ve put him behind the judging table rather than an oven… 😂

Pam brings warmth, wit and a perfectionist’s eye, while Phil is ready with that critical stare when a bake doesn’t quite cut it. Rehearsals are well underway and Sue and Jake are already having far too much fun putting our poor bakers through their paces.

Will they agree on anything? You’ll have to come and find out… 🍰👀

🎂📺 On This Day in Bake Off History! 📺🎂

On 17th August 2010, the very first episode of the beloved TV show that inspired our musical was broadcast.

Back then, The Great British Bake Off looked a little different. The original logo featured simple white lettering over a rather magnificent raspberry-topped chocolate cake; the logo we know today was only created in 2011.

What started as a modest baking competition soon became a national obsession, inspiring countless home bakers, unforgettable television moments and, eventually, a musical packed with laughter, heart and a generous helping of cheeky innuendo! 🍰✨

Sixteen years later, we’re delighted to be bringing that baking magic to the stage in Solihull.

So whether you’re a Star Baker, a serial soggy-bottom sufferer, or simply someone who enjoys a good bun joke, we’d love you to join us this November! 😄

🤠🎭 Not long now for our friends at Coleshill On Stage!

In just a few weeks they’ll be taking over The Core Theatre with their brilliant production of Calamity Jane, running from 8th to 12th September.

Expect plenty of laughs, romance and some fabulous musical numbers, including the much-loved Secret Love. 🎶🌵
