I went to an ancient woodland yesterday as was yearning to be around trees. There were trees propped up by stilts that were over 800 years old, trees that looked like figures emerging out of the ground (see image 4), dead stumps of trees whoโ€™s innards were home to so many creatures and trees that had intertwined and literally fused with each other (image 3). These woods were vibrating with so much energy. And lots of mushrooms! Such a pleasure to be part of this show. I went to visit yesterday and there are so many intriguing, surreal, playful, beautiful pieces. I love how the different works correspond to each other. Itโ€™s been refreshing to move away from some quite tightly controlled stitch work to explore and play around with materials. My propensity towards obsessive repetition can sometimes feel like itโ€™s coming from a place of fear and the move away from it marks quite a moment of progress and release. These pieces, these quiet little explorations are part of this journey. โ€œPaintingโ€ with beeswax is great. I love the way it shrouds whatโ€™s underneath but there is still a luminosity to it. The rusted metal and its brown and green patinas appearing through like the surface of a lake or a landscape. I like the unpredictability of melting the beeswax back and what marks remain and what appears underneath. โฃIโ€™m grateful that doing these has in a way revived my inquisitiveness and curiosity for the unpredictability of materialโ€ฆ
