To mark the 350th anniversary of the birth of the Salopian John Weaver, Shrewsbury is displaying three sculptures by Salvador Dalí. It is the first time these pieces have been seen in the UK.

So, making their British debuts are the Surrealist Piano with its dancers' legs and a flouncy skirt, Dalí’s Homage to Terpsichore, the muse of dance, and his Dalínian Dancer inspired by the passion and flamboyance of flamenco.

Dali and the Weaver Ensemble — how good is that! Don’t miss it!

Pete, Chiara and Artur play the parts of John Weaver, Hester Santlow and Mons Dupré, but did you realise that the recorder player Evelyn is playing the part of Jacques Paisible and our harpsichordist David is Charles Dieupart?
Jacques Paisible (c1656 – 1721), was a French composer and recorder virtuoso who lived and worked in London for about forty years. He married Moll Davis, singer and mistress of Charles II in 1686, and was a vitual fixture at London theatres, performing in the interval entertainments. Charles Dieupart (1676 - 1751) was a French harpsichordist, violinist, and composer who settled in London sometime after 1702/03. He was a prominent member of the Drury Lane musical establishment.

Hester Santlow who was Weaver’s Venus, outshone all other female dancers on the London stage in the early 18th century. Her illegitimate daughter Harriot married into the aristocracy and thus it is that Hester Santlow is related to Diana, Princess of Wales. Diana liked to say that she once wanted to be a ballerina…
