Brief Synopsis - written by Joan Pinnington, Show Director for 30 years
Shrewsbury Musical Theatre Company Originally known as Shrewsbury Amateur Operatic Society, SMTC was formed in 1923 and has since performed one or two shows every year to the people of Shropshire and beyond. Early shows took place in the small County Theatre but in 1936 the Society moved to the Granada Cinema, a 1500-seat venu

e and regularly filled it to capacity. All types of shows were produced including G & S, light opera, Rogers and Hammerstein and also to great acclaim My Fair Lady and Camelot. Unfortunately in 1972 the Granada Cinema closed and the Society moved to the Music Hall which had no raked seating and a very small stage. However the Society was determined to succeed and some ambitious shows were presented there including Fiddler on the Roof, Carousel and Die Fledermaus. Luckily in 1985 the Music Hall underwent a major renovation and now has raked seating and a totally refurbished stage area and modern technical equipment. Since then the Society has gone from strength to strength presenting first class shows including Singing in the Rain, Anything Goes, Me and My Girl, 42nd Street and a modern Pirates. The Music Hall closed in 2009, which meant finding a new venue. SAOS opened at the new Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury with Oliver in 2011, playing to full houses. Since then, SAOS has performed many Award winning shows at Theatre Severn such as Oliver, Titanic, Chess, Fiddler on the Roof and our recent production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert. In 2019, after feedback from the Shropshire public who said our shows are top quality and not amateur, the company was renamed Shrewsbury Musical Theatre Company. FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🍩🎭
Did you know that in Come From Away, the town’s Tim Hortons is the central hub where the community gathers?

It’s so iconic that the show’s opening line even declares: "Everything starts and ends at Tim Hortons!" ☕

✨Naturally, our cast took that lyric very seriously.

Feast your eyes on how we crush rehearsals, fueled entirely by donuts and coffee! 🎬👇

Our cast has to tackle lines in multiple different languages. We asked some of the cast of Come From Away to test their lines on Google Translate. Watch to find out who passed the test and who got completely lost in translation!

🎉 FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🎉
The hit musical Come from Away is based on incredible true stories - including the character, Bob. ✈️🗽

The real Bob (Tom McKeon from New Jersey) arrived in Gander terrified, suspicious, and worried about his safety. But the overwhelming kindness of strangers completely changed his outlook on life.

We are looking for a black male actor/singer to play this powerhouse dual role for our Shropshire premiere at Theatre Severn.

The Roles:
• BOB: A tough, guarded New Yorker. He’s sharp and cynical at first, but his walls beautifully crumble over time.
• MUHUMUZA: An African passenger who uses warmth and non-verbal connection to overcome huge language barriers.

An incredible, fast-paced show with amazing music and a supportive and friendly cast.

Could you be Bob?

Bob is a tough New Yorker. He lands somewhere unexpected, convinced the world might be ending. He’s wary, guarded, and a bit sharp around the edges. But over time, something shifts. The walls come down, and we see a different side of him.

You’ll also play Muhumuza – an African passenger who struggles with language and cultural differences, and finds other ways to connect with people.

We’re casting for Come From Away – the Shropshire premiere. It’s a lively musical with great songs, real stories, and moments that will make people laugh and think.

You’ll be part of a friendly group who support each other and enjoy putting on a show together.
If this sounds like something you’d like to try, get in touch.
