FESTIVAL SPOTLIGHT ON: MOZES ROSENBERG

There aren’t many guitarists who grew up quite as close to the source of gypsy jazz as Mozes Rosenberg. Part of the extraordinary Rosenberg musical family, Mozes was playing concerts with his brother Stochelo and The Rosenberg Trio while still a child — and by the age of just 13 had already played with flamenco legend Paco de Lucía.

Today he’s established as one of the outstanding guitarists on the international Gypsy Jazz scene. There’s incredible technique, of course, but what really sets Mozes apart is the combination of that famous Rosenberg sound with beautiful phrasing, swing and a remarkably relaxed way of making extremely difficult things look effortless.

SHREWSBURY DJANGO FEST 2026 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:
OLLI SOIKKELI

From a small town in Finland to the jazz clubs of New York, Olli Soikkeli has become one of the most exciting guitarists of his generation.

Olli discovered Django Reinhardt as a teenager and quickly became completely absorbed in Gypsy Jazz. Since moving to New York he’s appeared at venues including Birdland, the Blue Note, Town Hall and Lincoln Center, and has played with musicians including Stochelo Rosenberg, Tommy Emmanuel, Bucky Pizzarelli and Cyrille Aimée.

His playing has that rare combination of frightening technique and genuine musicality — fast when it needs to be, but always swinging and melodic. The Wall Street Journal described him as a guitarist combining “astonishing dexterity and speed with pure soul.”

Olli Soikkeli joins Paulus Schäfer for the Saturday night concert at Shrewsbury Django Fest 2026 and is set to give masterclasses at the Gypsy Jazz Retreat running alongside the festival.

That's one of the most important ideas Jan Brouwer will explore with me this Thursday (today) inside *The Gypsy Jazz Club* as we work through 'If I Had You.'

Jan considered adding lots of jazzy chords. Then he came back to what serves the music: clear, simple accompaniment that supports the lead player without getting in the way.

It’s one of the great Gypsy Jazz jam tunes, but the fast-moving chord changes can make it feel tricky to solo over.

So in this lesson, I’ll show you two easy ways to solo on 'Djangology':

A simple three-note pattern that outlines the changes.

And a freeing G major / G pentatonic approach that lets you stop chasing every chord.
