This is not just a random page. This is the final checklist of act 3 of my latest game. What this job entails is going through every single room (28 locations) and making sure EVERY character, object or hotspot has a reaction for all six verbs. It's the second least exciting part of the process but it's not without it's little avenues of pleasure...

If you talk to something that seems strange to talk to, it might say 'I can't talk to that' or it MIGHT give you a gag, a bit of random lore, a clue or something completely silly. The reason I think this is important is because just saying 'it doesn't work' gets very annoying very quickly. Sometimes it's necessary, but the player should always get some kind of personally written response to certain actions.

Also it's kind of boring work sometimes... so ideas pop out and they go in. The most dark and weird jokes in all the games are almost always in these interactions. It's because there's an element of 'easter egg'. An opportunity to catch the player off guard with the amount of thought put into it. That little 'ah they thought of that too, he'.

Here's an example:

Try and use a marker pen on an oil painting. The player looks left, pause, looks right (alluding to the backgrounds in game) and makes a joke about 'do you really want me in charge of the artwork?'. Silly stuff like that.

75% of players won't ever see it, and that's why it's fun and deserves some effort.

The ultimate free-wheeling Sheffield dev team!

Cooking along nicely. Drawing the last room... emotional stuff. Still plenty to do. Sounds absolutely delightful thanks to Jono's vision (or hearing if it's audio?). Dragging AGS into modern audio techniques using our sometimes rudimentary but effective workarounds.

Only got 24 bugs/things need altering on the first run. Not bad. It took me 2.5 hours... and I'm obviously speed running it faster than anyone else will. Maybe that equates to about 6/7 hours of play? Not bad!
