And it’s another dark album. With Millar-McMeeken’s creepy spoken words (think: a penitent Jigsaw with a Scottish accent) accompanying five of the nine tracks, it’s more mindful than contemplative but, like the Gaspar Claus release, Meierkord’s masterful cello playing offsets the crepuscular with a semblance of stark hope. And while the vocal tracks are noticeably grainier in comparison to the others, there’s a sense of space, vast and safe, prevalent in both that unites the disparate contributions; like scenes of a film, interchanging moments of contemplation and ongoing narrative.

Nozom Yoneda, aka Nonturn, walked around Tokyo recording everyday life, focusing on repetitions (traffic signals, footsteps, machinery). At the same time, he took video of each occurrence. He then composed Repeating Town by sampling his recordings and snapping them to a 96 BPM grid.

The best sounds captured outside the studio in August.

"Repeating Town" has a touch of musique concrète infused with the experience of club music. The steady tempo gives the whole thing a "danceable impulse," but instead of synthetic sounds, the materiality of everyday life emerges. This isn't a simple attempt to "make a beat" from street sounds. Nonturn is more interested in the moment when sound ceases to be information and becomes a physical event. Then, the hum of an air conditioner can have the weight of a bass, a transition signal the function of a hi-hat, and a random conversation becomes an almost abstract murmur.
