Did you guess it?

Since the start of October, we’ve been developing the world of the show starting with the music. We’ve been lucky to work with some wonderfully talented musicians from Leeds Conservatoire who’ve helped us over the first few sessions. Have a listen to ‘Bee Sting’, one of the songs we worked on in Session 2, with clips from all our sessions thus far!

Music and Lyrics - Jon Boden

Jon Boden is a singer, composer, and musician, best known as lead singer and main arranger of Bellowhead. His first instrument is the fiddle, and he is a proponent of “English traditional fiddle style” and also of “fiddle singing”, both of which he employs in the duo Spiers & Boden, and previously in both Bellowhead and as a member of Eliza Carthy’s Ratcatchers. He has been the recipient of 11 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, more than any other musician.

Throughout Jon’s folk music there is a commitment to social singing, and he’s actively promoted this via his involvement in Royal Traditions and Soundpost, two Sheffield based organisations.

Outside of folk he has composed music for both theatre and film, most notably two Royal Shakespeare productions at Stratford: 'Merchant of Venice' (2008) and 'A Winter’s Tale' (2012). In 2013 he was commissioned to compose a version of 'Little Musgrave' to be performed alongside Benjamin Britten’s work of the same name at Aldeburgh. He also appears in Richard Curtis’s film 'About Time' and contributed music to the score.

Book/Story - Katherine Kaims (She/Her)

Katherine Kaims is an actor, theatre maker and folk musician currently studying Actor Musician at Leeds Conservatoire. She specialises as a woodwind player, writer, and theatre maker. During her studies she has been assistant director and dance captain for Peter Rowe’s Beauty and The Beast: The Rock ’n’ Roll Panto while playing Fairy Fortunate, as well as playing Grocer Woman and providing oboe, accordion and percussion for Eugène Ionesco’s Rhinoceros.

Originally from Sheffield, she’s been deeply embedded in the British Folk tradition from an early age, appearing at folk festivals and clubs up and down the country from Scotland to Sheffield and St. Alban’s. A singer and multi-instrumentalist, the nature of ensemble artistry is at the core of her values. From developing scripts to breathing new life into folk music, she’s always concerned with truthful stories and lives, especially those that reflect her upbringing in the North.

Having grown up attending theatre across Yorkshire, the influences of seeing Northern stories and hearing Northern voices has inspired her to make and develop work which showcases the community that allowed her to share her own authentic voice.

MEET THE TEAM 🌄🎶🐝

Director - Jonathan Rainey Reid (He/Him)

Jonathan Rainey Reid is a theatre maker and musician originally from the north of Ireland. Having grown up in orchestras and theatre companies for as long as he can remember, music in theatre has always been a part of his life. Since moving to Leeds for his studies, Jonathan has been lucky enough to collaborate with a lot of amazing artists and companies and found a love for new writing, adaptive theatre and folklore. He’s helped to tell a lot of different stories in a lot of different ways, but at their core the stories are interesting and most importantly fun, and that’s what fuels him to make. Enjoyment.

As a writer, Jonathan has aided in the dramaturgical development of several scripts, and has also had his own work developed with Opera North (Good Morning Channel 1), Leeds Playhouse and the National Theatre (Lazaretto).

As a performer credits include: Jake (Accordion, Bass, Percussion, Harmonica) in 'The Not So Grimm Twins' (Wrongsemble, Summer 2022 Tour), Feste/MD in 'Twelfth Night' (Leeds Playhouse/Tour), The Youtube Chorus in 'Public Domain' (Southwark Playhouse/West End)
