I went up to the apiary early today to transfer a couple of swarms in to their permanent home. What do I find? Another swarm, not our bees either. Bees really do attract bees.

The next batch of mating boxes have gone out to the walled garden.

These each have around 600 nurse bees and a ripe queen cell.

These cells should each produce a virgin queen today or tomorrow. These will go off on mating flights over the next couple of weeks 🤞.

They have a spectacular guardian .

Here's something new for us. I had eleven queen cells drawn and capped perfectly on one graft frame.
Then there was this one, uncapped and ridiculously long.
It had obviously got dislodged from its pool if Royal jelly and never fully developed.

Here are some of our bees collecting goo from a recently felled Sycamore stump. They use it to make propolis which in turn gets used to seal up gaps in the hive.

We are always very excited when our bee products end up being used for an unusual project, this time by the incredibly talented Gina Le Faux. The unvarnished fiddle in the first image has been stained using propolis from our bees in the next images. It is ground to a fine powder then mixed with alcohol. Finally it is carefully painted on to bring out the colours and patterns in the wood. The coatings, including the varnish, will be an important part of the final tone of the finished handmade fiddle.

The active bee keeping season may be over but there are still jobs to do.

The bees glue everything together with propolis.tree resins collected by older forager bees and brought back to the hive go use. It seals gaps and cavities and is anti microbial/ bacterial/fungal/viral

It is a good thing but makes moving frames around in the bix very difficult as they get really stuck together. So during winter I have to scrape all the frames clean.

I collect the scrapings for Bec to work her magic and make propolis tincture. Good for smearing on cuts, scrapes , burns and also gargled for sore throats.

It smells divine (if you like that sort of thing).

Well we did get some heather honey after all.
